The tunnel-bridge

I don't know if there is something alike in all the world. For me, it was the first (and last) time that I crossed a strange men's work that starts being a bridge and, suddenly dives into the sea to become a tunnel.

Expensive, of course, but a clever solution and a different experience, putting Sweden only minutes away, without restrictions for ships.

Entrance to the old Royal Library building

This is the entrance to the old library building. It is still there, or so I am told, but they've added a new building to it since our last visit (1995) that I haven't seen yet. Seems to be a very interesting building though, judging by the pictures that I've stumbled upon! At a certain point in the past, I also subscribed to the Royal Library magazine, but I haven't received an issue for years now.

A quick way to get acquainted with a foreign city

Langelinie

Somebody told me once that the most fastest and cheapest way to come to know a foreign city if you take the public trafic. Here the tip, try whether it works.
One of the fastest and cheapest ways to see Copenhagen is going for a ride on bus line 29 starting from the bus terminal at the Radhuspladsen,in the direction for Nordhavn.
Before taking the bus, just check out the Radhus which is, not suprisingly, located on the Radhuspladsen of course. From outside it's a big, impressive old building.
Then take the bus which passes by the historical buildings and attractions along its way as follows
Christiansborg Palace on Slotsholmen houses the Danish Parliament,
Royal Theatre House has long been the center for culture.
Kongens Nytorv is a historical square at the east end of the famous Strøget
Nyhavn, I think that Nyhavn seems as if would be a part of Amsterdam,
Amalienborg is the residence of the Royal Family,
Langelinie where all the cruise ships line up. Not far from here is the little mermaid.
Do not forget to get a guide book in order to check immediately all what you have seen.

The monotony of streets

Morning walk down a random street

Even if the architecture of some roads has the greyness of the communist years in Romania, I have really enjoyed their calmness and reassuring monotony. Maybe the thought of a safe distance from those years, maybe the presence of friends met abroad in later years, maybe the promise of a Danish capital made my morning walks very enjoyable.

Copenhagen - Sculptural composition
1 more image

We have paid attention to a sculptural composition in a garden near to St. Pederssmede. An allegorical figure of death carries away a child and a woman - its mother inconsolably cries about loss of her child.

I don't know who is the author of this composition, but it is magnificent both on artist's intention and on performance... Some time we remained under impression of what we had seen...

Copenhagen - Latin district

“The Latin district" of Copenhagen received its name by analogy to the Parisian district around Sorbonna. “The Latin district" in Copenhagen consists of brick buildings of the city university. It was established in 1479. It is one of the largest universities in Scandinavia.

During English bombardments in the beginning of the XIX century all ancient buildings were destroyed, new buildings in the same style appeared on their place.

Copenhagen - Domhuset

A neo-classical building of the city parliament Domhuset is located on Gammel Torv.
This corner of Copenhagen reminded us Russian cities. There are such buildings where local authorities are placed in each of them.
However they are painted usually in yellow color.

Palads Cinema

It is not that I have been to the movies, but coming with the train into Copenhagen. This was the first building that struck my eye! A beautiful colorful building.
Later I learned it was a cinema.

I liked it because of it's architecture.

Den Sorte Diamant

Founded by Frederik III in 1648. The Original building was located in the "Rigsdagsgaarden" The present older building was erected between 1898-1906 according to plans made by H.I. Holm.

Modern art in the harbour

If you want to go and see the little mermaid or Kastellet, don't take a bus, walk along the harbour. It will not take you too long and on the way you can spot a few interesting monuments, such as this modern art column and fountain.
