Kronborg

Kronborg is located in Helsingør about 35 minutes by train north of Copenhagen.
Kronborg was the setting of the sheakspeare play hamlet, so you will not just see a pretty castle but also an important place for theater fans.
One other interesting aspect of Kronborg is the basement where you have a statue of a guy called "Holger Danske".
He is the guardian of Denmark and the story goes that whenever Denmark is in trouble he wakes up and saves the nation.
The setting for Kronborg is really nice right by the sea and i think it´s one of the most scenic castles in Europe.

An other place not to be...

An other place not to be missed is Helsingör (Elsinore) with the legendary Hamlet Castle. It is not so off the beaten path when you continue from Copenhagen to any place in Sweden a bit north of Malmö. It is only 20 minutes by ferry over to Helsingborg in Sweden.

I have only stopped (very) briefly in Helsingør, when I took a ferry over and back at sunset from Helsingborg, Sweden after seeing a football match.

I was planning to go up to Helsingør when I came to Copenhagen, but after almost 8 weeks of traveling I decided to just hang around the city. I would love to return to Helsingør and especially to see Kronborg Slot, which is Hamlet's castle (Elsinore Castle). Hamlet is my favourite play by William Shakespeare (of the ones that I have read of course).

Anyway, as you can see from my photos this is a beautiful coastal area of Denmark, especially at sunset. And I do recommend taking the ferry from Helsingør to Helsingborg at sunset - it can be very romantic :)

To get to Helsingør from Copenhagen you can take a train up, it only takes 45 minutes (see the website below for more information).

Shopping

If seeing a Danish castle and a ferry ride to Sweden isn't enough to bring you out to Helsingor, there's also shopping to be had. Smaller and lower key than Kobenhavn, the streets of Helsingor feel different, but still very Danish. If you go early Saturday morning, like I did, the shops will be hopping.

Ferry Ride to Sweden

After seeing the setting for Hamlet, it's easy to hop on a ferry and go to Sweden! You'll be in a whole new country before you know it. The ferry ride takes about 20 minutes and goes to a town called Helsingborg. I couldn't find very much to do in this town, but it was still worth the trip. The dock is very nice and there was plenty of grass for me and my friends to relax and have a picnic....in Sweden!

Hamlet!

If you have an extra day, go see the castle used as the setting for Hamlet. It's not a very elaborate castle, though. It was used to control the nearby shipping port more than anything else, and was occasionally used by the royalty for kick ass parties. The palace is not very impressive inside. But be sure to check out the dungeon underneath. It's very spooky and cool.

A great great trip while visiting Copenhagen. This town and seaport of eastern Denmark, is home to Kronborg Castle, mostly famous as the place where Shakespeare's Hamlet takes place. A train from Copenhagen will get you there in 40 minutes.

Kronborg Castle

Head north to Helsingor were the ferries sail to Sweden. While you are there you should catch this place which was made famous as the Elsinore Castle in Shakespeare's Hamlet.
In addition to the castle there is a naval museum that can be included on a combined ticket

The castle is on the north side of the harbour after you get off the train from Copenhagen.

HAMLET'S CASTLE: About thirty miles north of Kobenhavn is Helsingor It is worth the trip to see the KRONBKRG SLOT (KRONBORG CASTLE) on which Shakespeare based Hamlet's castle and a popular place to perform his play.

See my Kronborg page for more information on this historical fortress turned castle.
