Det Kgl. Danske Haveselskabs Have (The Royal Danish Garden Society’s Gardens) was founded in 1830, and moved in 1882 to its present location in the former kitchen garden of Frederiksberg Palace (read my other tips).

It is a beautiful garden with a small lake, a rose garden, a viewpoint in the middle, and separate small gardens with different themes. If you are interested in botanics and flowers you could find some old and rare species here in the gardens.

Inside the Royal Danish Garden Society’s Gardens there are a couple of old buildings (Kavalerfløjen, Brøndsalen, and Paradehuset) and they have all had different functions of the palace.

There is free admission to the garden, and it is open from sunrise to sunset.

I used to work in the northern part of Copenhagen, and on my way to and from work I passed through the beautiful Mølleådalen. The name is a little hard to translate, but could mean: Valley of a small river with many watermills... Mølleådalen is a great place for a walk on the paths along the small river, Mølleåen. I especially think the area around Fuglevad, Brede (read my other tip) and Ørholm is very beautiful with many old houses, watermills and the nature.

You can also explore Mølleåen by renting a canoe or kayak. I did that with my colleagues in the summer of 2006 and it was a great and funny experience. You can rent canoes here: Nybro Boat- & Canoe Rental.

Amager Fælled is a large grassy park in the southern part of Copenhagen, near Ørestad and the Bella Center.

I had ideas of going cycling in Amager Fælled, but after thirty-six straight hours of rain large parts of the park were flooded, and I don't mean just little puddles -- the bicycle routes were really impassable. This is all a low-lying area, after all, so flooding is not unusual. But I'm sure it's a pleasant place when it gets dried out a bit.

In the park of Frederiksberg Castle I have seen this funny tree. Any kind of people hang up to the branches of this tree mostly used baby`s dummys fixed with a small note on it . I never have seen such a custom.

Amaliehaven is a nice park to the east of Amalienborg Palace near the river Inderhavn. It's the newest park in the city, having been built in 1983. In spite of being so close to the popular Amalienborg Palace, we had the park almost to ourselves when we visited.

The royal danish horticultural society was established back in 1830 which makes it the second oldest in the world after the english. The society has a garden that dates back from 1882 on a location that was ones the kitchen garden for the Frederiksberg palace. I like to visit this garden and can recommend it for a relaxing walk or for gathering inspiration for your own garden. The gardens layout is made as a division of the grounds into “rooms” for inspiration. One of the nice things is that they have peacocks walking free on the ground.

The garden is open all year and there is no admission.

The garden is located at Pile Allé 6 next to the main entrance of a large park called Frederiksberg have. (at the end of Frederiksberg allé)

On the island west of Copenhagen are the areas Amager Fælled, Kalvebod Fælled and Kongelunden. The areas are similar as they all can be used for recreational purposes, but also different as the nature of the areas varies.

Amager Fælled is the area closest to Copenhagen. To get here, take the metro to Universitet st. Amager Fælled is next to the station. The area has loads of bushes and a few fields with cattle. The area was along with Kalvebod used for military training, so respect the signs and stay on the wide, well maintained tracks. Amager Fælled and Kalvebod Fælled is 2230 hectares and is twice the size of the more known and much more visited park Jægersborg Dyrehave (or just Dyrehaven).
The new part of Copenhagen: Ørestad, that is being built these years is on the outskirts of these two areas.

Kalvebod Fælled is south of Amager Fælled. It has more fields and open land than the other two areas. Here are some bushes and woods, but most of the area has fields with cattle. To get here take the metro to Vestamager st. Next to the station is a nature center; Naturcenter Vestamager, which is open every day 10-16. Here you can get a brochure and borrow a free bike. It is a good idea to get a bike as the area is big, and the tracks are long. In the south part of the area, there are a bird sanctuary with a lake and a bird watching tower. There are areas for picnic, bonfires and primitive campsites with shelters. It is clearly that the area has been used for military purposes as the roads are long, straight and wide. Kongelunden is south of Kalvebod Fælled and is a forest. To get here take bus 33 from Town Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen) or bus 32 from Ørestad st. or bus 36 from Tårnby st. You should definetely spend sometime in the peaceful parks of the city. There are lots of different choices to go. For example, Tivoli Gardens is one of the most beatiful parks of Europe. It is worth to see.
