It's a wonderful little teahouse and cake shop in the middle of Copenhagen, a MUST GO for afternoon tea. It has a long list of testimonials, including this one I got off the website below: You would be hard pressed to nominate a finer cake shop in Copenhagen than the venerable La Glace. Located just off Strøget, the city's famous pedestrian shopping street, La Glace has been tempting passers by with its sensational cakes since 1870. The cake shop makes special occasion recipes, for instance they have made cakes in celebration of the newly engaged royal couple, crown prince Frederik and Mary, and will be confecting a commemorative Hans Christian Andersen cake to mark his bicentenary in 2005. La Glace is also worth a visit for its marvellous hot chocolate alone. And needless to say, chocolate features as a vital ingredient in much of its cake repertoire. Favorite Dish: The hot chocolate and the cakes are enticingly displayed, so delicious and creamy!! Don't forget to buy a tin of the cocoa powder to make your own hot chocolate at home... MMMMM... Their slogan is "Cakes, art and love make hardship go away"... Gotta love it!
La Glace is a Copenhagen institution frequented both by tourists and locals and has a wonderful feel of decadence, of the days when local people would meet to sit over coffee and pastries and put the world to rights.
When I went to put this tip here, VT gave me the: "Is your tip about one of these places?" box and the first thing on it was Burger King...........or something of that ilk.................Burger King!!!
OK Copenhagen has its share of these modern places but La Glace, and I am sure there must be other similar places, is a definite must.
Favorite Dish: Hot chocolate and pastries for elevenses! Choose from a wide selection of home made pattiserie, including, obviously, Danish Pastries! Washed down with delicous hot chocolate, served in jugs with separate bowls of whipped cream, and when your jug is finished just ask for more! Sit and read the paper, have convivial conversations, take photographs of the display cakes in the window, just generally chill-out :)
La Glace that was founded in 1870 has under the motto” Cakes and art and love each day make all troubles fade away” been selling cakes and pastries from the little shop in Skoubogade, this makes it the oldest confectionary in Denmark and best in my mind.
You might like too argue that all your troubles will not fade away, as you will gain a bit much weight if you eat cake that frequent. But one or two times a year I like to visit La Glace for cake and hot chocolate. (And skip lunch for that day!)
One special thing to note is that when you order a cup of hot chocolate is that you can get all the refills you like just ask the young ladies that serves you for more.
You can check out the cakes on there web page.
Favorite Dish: The hot valrhona chocolate
