Vor Frelser Kirke - Our Saviour’s Church, Copenhagen
Located in Christianshavn, Our Savior's Church is famous for its golden staircase spiraling up the outside of the steeple. This famous building in Christianshavn was completed in 1696 in honor of the ruling monarchy. The steeple and staircase were not built until about 50 years later.
You may visit the church for free. Admission to the tower costs about US$3.
The Church of Our Saviour, or in Danish, Vor Frelsers Kirke, is a baroque church situated in the Christianshavn area of Copenhagen. Built between 1682 and 1695, it is particularly famous for its corkscrew spire, which wasn't completed until 1752 and can be climbed via the winding staircase which unusually is on the outside of the building! The views from the top are outstanding.
Inside the building take note of the organ facade as it is supported by two elephants - there are elephants everywhere in Copenhagen (due to the fact that the highest chivalric order of Denmark, worn by members of the royal family and headed by the monarch, is called the Order of the Elephant)!
In Christianshavn you will find the absolutely wonderful Church of our Saviour. When you look up, you can see, that there is an exterior golden staircase winding up to the top of the spire. There a golden globe is crowned by a statue of Christ.
Also the inside of the church is magnificent - extraordinary decorations and an exquisite organ! Really worthwhile visiting.
I must be a gluten for sightseeing as I did this on the same day as the Town Hall.
You can actually find this by walking if you wish as I did, as Copenhagen is fairly straightforward to navigate by foot.
The trip up is up to you, 20DKK which is about £2.00 gets you up there,as before you go up and up,round and round, some pretty narrow wooden stairways, very dusty with plenty of cobwebs and charm, but round we go and YES we've made it to the top, where the views again are worth every penny.
I don't remember the name of this church but it was one of the most interesting I've have ever seen. The spire can be climbed but the steps are on the outside so as you are climbing, you get a fantastic view of Copenhagen. If you have a fear of heights, it's a definite miss, just a little railing between you and wonderful Copenhagen streets.
The Vor Frelsers Kirske church has a beautiful spirling tower that will let you enjoy the view on Copenhagen. I recommend going up just before sunset.
300-year old baroque church..300 years old organ..Unique tower with outside.twisted staircase and an impressive vieuw.
This church in Christianhavn is known for its distinctive spire which can be climbed for a great view over the city.
This is a church in Christianshavn offering, in my opinion, the best view of the city. Be warned though: the stairs are very steep and narrow. It was a difficult climb, but......
The beautiful Church of our Saviour has a spire with on outside spiral staircase which can be climbed for a magnificent view of Copenhagen and its harbour.
