Copenhagen Zoo is situated in Frederiksberg, which is a part of Copenhagen. The zoo is one of the oldest in Europe, and was founded in 1859 as a private institution. Niels Kjærbølling decided after a visit to Berlin Zoo, that Copenhagen should have a place like that too.
He was given a small piece of land in the huge garden that belonged to Frederiksberg Castle, who is next door to the Zoo. He soon opened his new Zoo, which was indeed very little, just 4000 square meters. Here he showed of a not very impressive collection of animals: Eagles, Owels, hens, ducks, rabbits, a fox in a chain, a seal in a bathtub and a turtle in a bucket. Besides the live animals, visitors could admire Kjærbølling’s private collection of stuffed animals.

Today the Zoo is much bigger, about 11 hectares, but it is still a small place compared to some of the big Zoos around the world. What the Zoo lacks in size it has in charm. The Zoo have some old and charming buildings.

The Zoo is still undergoing development. The opinion about keeping animals captured has changed. The Zoo is constantly making new facilities for the animals; recently the giraffes got a new house and were placed on an African savanna with other African animals. This year the Zoo is building a new place for the elephants. The elephants have a high status in this Zoo, and the architect behind the new facilities is the famous Norman Foster.

The Zoo is a nice and cozy place to walk around and learn more about animals and just relax.

The Zoo has some old and charming buildings, among these are the 50 meter high wooden tower, build in 1905, with inspiration from the Eiffel tower of Paris. This can be climbed (a 5-kroner coin is needed to enter), and since the Zoo is placed on a hill, the views of Copenhagen and surroundings are great. On clear days Sweden can be spotted.

I'm not a big fan of many zoos since the animals' welfare often seems to be virtually ignored. I'm recommending this one, though, because Copenhagen zoo activates its animals, gives them large enclosures and is very environmentally friendly. They are part of international programs against the extinction of animals, and you will often be able to see newborn animal babies here. There is a great variety of different species, and I'd say it's definately worth a trip if you are at all interested in animals.

The new elephant facilities

I have been to a couple of zoo’s around the World and I think that Copenhagen Zoo is one of the best I have seen (Australia Zoo is the best!). I especially like to spend time in the ‘Monkey World’, the ‘Rainforest’ and the new elephant facilities which opened in June 2008. For the younger visitors there are horse riding and the ‘Children Zoo’ with rabbits, goats and more. Besides that, Copenhagen Zoo is the only zoo outside Australia that has Tasmanian Devils in captivity - Crown princess Mary is from Tasmania…

The zoo is one of the oldest in Europe and was founded in 1859. At the opening the most exotic exhibits were stuffed birds, a seal in a bathtub and a turtle in a bucket. In the early years the zoo focused on showing as many different types of animals as possible, but as animal welfare later became an issue, the number of different species has dropped in favour of more space to each animal. Today the Zoo is home to 3,300 animals and 264 species.

Check their webpage for opening hours and admission fees.

The Copenhagen "Zoologisk have" is among the oldest zoo's in the world.
the zoo has more than 2000 animals and was recently renovated and do now also hold a "learning zoo" for children.

"Did you know that the Zoo is home to 3,300 animals and 264 species? A fair amount has happened at the Zoo since it opened in 1859, when its most exotic exhibits were stuffed birds, a seal in a bathtub and a turtle in a bucket. Today, the Zoo is a state-of-the-art attraction containing a Children's Zoo, a Zoo Stage and thematic adventure trails, each of which presents animals from different parts of the world - all in an entertaining way to show you more about the different animals and how they live. The Zoo is also a window to the wilds of the world and participates actively in nature conservation projects worldwide." (from the webpage on Københavns Zoologiske Have)

The Zoo is open every day, all year round - even over Christmas and New Year.

Two good friends

Copenhagen ZOO is a great place to visit, specially if you travel with kids, but also for everyone else! The ZOO have 3300 animals from 264 species and it opened in 1859. They have animals from all over the world. The animal populations and the newly built facilities make the Zoo one of the very best in Europe.

Personally i like the exotic animals like elephants, tigers and lions. When I visited we had the luck to pass by the wolfs when they were fed. That was a great sigth! There was also something going on with the bears. It was three standing together, and they was acting crazy! They run around og stood on to legs, sniffed the air and looked completely mad. It was really cool to watch! We also watched the seals when they got food. It is amazing what you can learn the animals!

The ZOO is open all the year, but in March, April, May and September it will only be open in the weekends and public holidays.

Don't usually do zoos but enjoyed this one, animals seemed to have a certain amount of freedom, the wolves looked pretty wild, the 'pingvins' are entertaining too

OK, this hardly wild (in the going out on the razzle sense) and hardly PC, but I love Zoo's, and this one is nice, that's about it, not amazing maybe, but I love 'em.
