A Viking Settlement and More
The bridge to Aalborg spans the Limfjord at it's narrowest point and this fact plays an important role in the development of the city which can trace its roots back a thousand years from a coin documenting "Alabu" (The name given to Aalborg) and gives the date 1040. Aalborg was an ancient Viking settlement and at Lindholm Hoje on the north side of the bridge, a
burial place dates back to c. 400 and two settlements are dated at c. 700.
Visit Aalborg's impressive Viking museum to see important remains from Danish antiquity.
In the Middle Ages, as it is today, Aalborg was one of the largest cities in Denmark. It's location on the Limfjord facilitated extensive trade in such products as oxen, herring and grain and through the years, one result of this thriving trade business, was a significant impact on the city's architecture.
Still standing tribute to the rich history of Aalborg, built hundreds of years apart, "Saint Budolfi Church" built in 1440AD and "Jens Bang`s Stonehouse" built from 1623 to 1624 by the merchant Jens Bang, who seemed to be a pretty interesting character, (Take a look at some of the faces on his building,) are just two of the many examples found here.
Brick and half-timber buildings can be seen throughout the city and the colors are fantastic. This photo of the "Old Town Hall" by Stenders Farlag shows the use of color popular in Aalborg.
