Hobro Things to Do

The circular fort at Fyrkat was built in 980 AD by the Danish King Harald Bluetooth. It is very similar to the more well-known one at Trelleborg on Sjaelland.

Inside the perfectly circular rampart, the fort was divided into precise quadrants by two wooden roads, each running across the diameter of the fort, and linking the four gateways. Each quadrant contained a regular arrangement of buildings, the post-holes of which have been marked by concrete discs. The whole arrangement has almost perfect radial symmetry, and is slightly unnerving.

Sorry the photo is so poor - it is difficult to get a good picture from the ground. That red speck in the middle is Dave!

The viking farmstead at the Fyrkat Vikingecenter has 9 reconstructed 10th century houses.

During the summer, families live here viking-style for a week at a time.
