Helsingborg, Sweden by hopang An interesting day trip out of the city of Copenhagen if you have time to spare when you are having a vacation in Copenhagen is to take a day trip to Helsingborg in Sweden. You may either take trains or buses to Helsingör (Elsinore) from Central Copenhagen. You will cross the Sound by ferries. There are several operators operating ferry services linking Helsingör with Helsingborg such as the Scandlines and HH Ferries. It takes just 20 minutes to travel by ferries between the two ports due to the short distance, the shortest between Denmark and Sweden. Among the popular tourist attractions in Helsingborg are Kärnan or the Kernel, Stortorget, Brunnby Church, St. Mary's Church, Convert Hall, Town Hall, Dunkers Culture Center, Jakob Hansens House, Municipal Museum, Fredriksdal Open-air Museum, Öresund Park and Hesingborg City Centre. The town of Tisvilde is situated on the north cost of Zealand. The towns name goes way back and tells the ancient story of worship to the Good of war Tyr also named Ti and vilde that comes from old Danish word "væld", meaning a spring. Making it Ti’s- spring. As the place of the War Good it was also here sacrifices was made to him often in the form of prisoners of war after battles. Maybe the ancient importance of this place can be seen from that, there in the wetlands below has been found the oldest Danish road system dating back to 2800 BC as a Woodbridge that was later (500-150 BC) made into a stone mounted road of 150 meters. When Christianity was introduced in Denmark Tibirke church (1120-1130) was made next to the spring and the name of the spring turned into the spring of saint Helene very typical of the Church to plaster ancient believes with new predicates and hope that people will forget the past. There is a walking path made as you can go and see the ancient road.

Interesting maybe not as much for the tasty mushrooms but for the closer and more observant contact with the nature your in. In all state forests its allowed to gather mushrooms for your own consumption in private forests you need the owners permission but I am sure you will never have any problems even in a private forest without a permit. You recognise that your in a state forest by a red pole or a red gate (see photos). Just bring a good mushroom book and don’t eat anything your not certain on is safe. The best period is from August to November.

Dronninglund, in the northern part of Danmark is the castle / palace, where the Danish royal family came from and nowadays their former palace is used as a luxury hotel. Dont miss to take a look inside the church nearby, it looks very interesting with great wooden decorations, frescos and paintings. When you start early in the morning from Arhus Dronningslund might be a good place for an early lunch, before you drive on northwards in order to get to Skagen at the tip of Danmark, where the Sakgerrak meets the Kattegat... Take the highway E45 to the north. Dronninglund is about 80km south of Skagen Leave a Comment

The Faroe-islands are part of Danmark as well, although they are listed like an independant state on VT. I came several times to these remote islands, when-ever our cruise-ship M/S Vistafjord was on her way to Iceland. You may see this great cruiseship, where I was working for more than 4 years, on my main picture, anchored off the Faroe islands close to the famous rock "The Hag" Some of the houses of Thorshavn are covered with grass, the climate is quite rough but still under influence of the golf-stream. Bagenkop on the south-end of the island of Langeland is another village we visited first in 1964, having been invited there by a cousin of my mother. In the year 2000 I returned there and I think that Bagenkop might also be an interesting place to go for ordinary tourists, who care for lovely landscapes and a quiet vacation. My favorite building was the church, where you may also see a sailing-boat hanging down from the ceiling, in order to get a safe return of the fishermen of Bagenkop. The husband of our relative was one of them, beeing out on the open sea fishing for several weeks, so we actually never met him. Leave a Comment

by globetrott Kopenhagen is a great place to see fancy spires - like the one of Vor Freslers Kirke - Church of the Saviour : This church in Christianshavn was built in about 1750 and 400 steps are leading to the top of the spire, where you will have a great view over the city What an idea to build the stairs outside in a great spiral - no bad idea in a country with only a bit of snow falling in winter Leave a Comment

Fristaden Christiania / Freestate of Christiania started as a Hippy-colony on an empty island opposite of the cruise-port of Kopenhagen. In 1971 the empty island was occupied by some hippies and they defended their status untill 1986, when their status was officially recognized by the city of Kopenhagen. They follow their own rules of "freedom" also using drugs etc. but on the other hand this freedom does not go so far, that you are allowed to take any pics... Leave a Comment
