The newest landmark in Esbjerg -- also at the harbor -- has attracted a lot of attention, both from visitors and locals. Called "Esbjerg's new giants," they are four chalky white figures, the late Svend Wiig Hansen's enormous sculpture, "Man Meets the Sea," located at Saeding Strand, on a big area of the shore opposite the fishing museum . These concrete figures, gazing out across the mysterious sea, are 79m high. They sit upright like Greek columns. The four figures are completely alike
This Monument is just out the city. Is impossible to miss it, is so big that is easy to find it.

    Fanø / Fanoe Island

Fanoe is an island immediately opposite Esbjerg harbour and little ferries constantly ply the water between the two with locals and tourists. It is a well-known island all throughout Denmark so I recommend it even though I have not yet been here myself - a close colleague is so besotted by it, she goes here on holiday every summer. The island really is nothing more than a sandbank which has developed into a habitable island along with the other unique Waddensee islands to the south which all belong to Germany. Fanoe too has lots of German tourists, but this also has to do with the fact that cooperation has been strong since medieval days when Fanoe locals often worked on German ships since the island was owned by the Danish king and they could hold no fleet of their own but only fishing vessels. Today, it is an island with a loooong child friendly beach and holiday cottages, as well as a thatched roof style village centre and nature where you can go for walks to seal sanctuaries. It is definately necessary to book accommodation in advance in high season but once you've done so, you can really relax and watch the sunsets.

Totally devoted to contemporary art, most of it Danish, you won't have heard of that many artists unless you are really into art. Having said that, it is quite an interesting museum in the way the exhibitions are put up with little pull out sections for you to decide what to create yourself, and also the Wittgenstein's Garden aroma section to put the meaning of art to the test.

Visit Legoland. Please visit Legoland. Hunt the girraffes and tigers, visit the wild west, get a bird's eye veiw of many of the old cities of Europe, or simply watch the children's eyes get bigger and bigger as you walk around your childhood fantasies made reality.
If, as a kid, you played with Lego and your Dad showed you how to increase the strength of the structure by making the bricks overlap, when you were about three, and he was just as keen to build with you as you were with him, then this might be a plce you need to visit.
People visit Esjberg to visit Legoland.

  • Directions: Just outside Esjberg. Lots of transport to take you there. Take the kids, though I went on my own as an adult, with a friend I made on my trip and we had a ball.

  • You'll get a nice view of the harbour, town and island of Fano. On a good day, you can even see the offshore windmill farm and Ribe Domkirke.

    Only 20 kroners.

just a 10 minute ferry trip from esbjerg lies nordby on the island of fano. it is a very old and picturesque. the trip was quite exhilerating as it was extremely windy and the sea air was pushed hard into our faces! Once across, we explored the town on foot through the cobbled streets and saw some very pretty thatched cottages. there were a few cafes and pubs and a supermarket. it was a very pleasant trip and very away from it all.

just out of the city centre on the beach road stands 4, 9 metre high statues. they must be seen to appreciate as you cannot realize the size until you are actually there.
