Favorite thing: Have a look for this great medieval church.
Its built in the middle of a large square.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Fondest memory: Plenty of parkinglots are around the church, and just opposite the church you will find the prison " Gammle Arrest"

Favorite thing: Ribe once was the capital and biggest town of Danmark. - That was a long time ago...
...today only the oversized church reminds a bit of that time
Fondest memory: Ribe is full of these lovely old houses with a half-timbered fassade, and on plenty of them you may see storch-nests, although unfortunately storch became rather rare in recent years.
I remember my first visit in Ribe, as a child in 1964, plenty of storchs lived there.

Favorite thing: Most of the streets have cobbled stones and are off limits for cars, as they are rather small
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Fondest memory: That way, without any modern cars inside the streets, you even get a better feeling of beeing in the 17th century now...

Favorite thing: Den Gammle Knast was the local prison, before it was turned into a modern Hotel.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Fondest memory: The hotel-rooms are the former cells : rather small in size, but very high rooms.
The architects built a 2-storey room with a bed to tear out of the walls, a small place to sit and private facilties as well...
...The old prisoners certainly had less comfort

Favorite thing: Its great to see, how many of the old half-timbered houses have survived all the centuries of modernisation
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Fondest memory: Any sort of craftsmen and professionals are rather expensive in Denmark - I guess that is one of many reasons, why people rather tried to keep the old buildings, than moderizing everything...

Favorite thing: It was one of my best childhood memories :
The storch-nests on top of most houses in Ribe.
I was there in 1964 and 1965 and so many storchs could I watch in their nests and flying around
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Fondest memory: I am afraid , that's over now !
and VT even cut off the storch's nest from my pic - UNLESS you click on the pic to enlarge it !!
Updated Mar 3, 2003
Favorite thing: Its a pity that almost no storchs are left, only the nests are still on top of the buildings.
People say : a storch-nest means happiness inside the house...
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Fondest memory: THIS seemed to have applied to this building at least :
It turned from a prison to a modern HOTEL !

Favorite thing: Ribe is a rather small town, but the church seems to be rather oversized on the first view.
But Ribe used to be capital of Danmark plenty of centuries ago and the big church was also ment for all the small villages of the surrounding area
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Fondest memory: Its a lovely little town and well worth a visit !

Favorite thing: On Fiskergade, there is a flood column with marks of how high the flood waters rose throughout time. The top ring was from a flood in 1634, when the waters rose 6 meters high.

Favorite thing: Like a lot of towns with 16th and 17th century homes in Denmark, Ribe is filled with a lot of brightly colored doors.
