Every Wednesday and Saturday there is a market place at Stændertorvet.
It can be considered as a tourist trap even though it is not based on tourists.
You can buy fresh food, fish and of danish stuff of all kind. The market gives an great atmosphere and Roskilde center should therefore be discovered on a saturday.

Restaurant Snekken at the Viking Ship Museum

After walking around the Viking Ship Museum which was great and certainly not a tourist trap, I thought I would try the restaurant next door.

I sat down and ordered a club sandwich from the waitress. It arrived at my table about 4 minutes later. The sliced breast of chicken was dripping with fat and looked like it had just been deep fried.

It was extremely rubbery, had bits of what I guessed were burnt french fries clinging to it and when I cut into the sandwich, horror of horrors. the chicken breast was still red in the centre - YUK !! - It reminded me of that scene in the film Erasahead, where he cuts into a chicken at the dinner table and blood spurts everywhere.

I called the waitress back and politely complained. Without a word of apology she barked "Well, if you don't like it, you don't have to pay for it, do you."

I was sitting there quietly finishing off my drink, wondering how on earth an awful restaurant like this managed to survive, when 2 coachloads of American tourists arrived, ushered in by their smiling red-coated guide.

It was all I could do not to say something when the people on the table next to me looked at the menu and cheerfully ordered 4 club sandwiches.

I paid for my drink and left.

Unique Suggestions: Bring a packed lunch. Sit and eat it overlooking the beautiful harbour. There is nothing wrong with the Viking Ship Museum itself, in fact it is excellent !

Fun Alternatives: As you come out of the station and cross the square with the big vases, you reach a T-junction. This is the main walking / shopping street.

To get to the cathedral and the Viking Ship Museum you are meant to go to left.

Stop and do a quick detour to your right and walk for just 100 meters. On the right, there is an excellent cheap take-away smørrebrød / open sandwich shop that will make you up a lovely packed lunch in a pretty box, together with salt and pepper and some fairly good throw away cuttlery.

You can get a drink there too

Giant Vases at the town square

Waited all morning for the market stalls to be set up. After a while, only a few stalls were set up and goods that were sold were nondescript stuff and vegetables.

Unique Suggestions: Give it a miss after summer.

Fun Alternatives: Go on a natural springs treasure hunt.Go see the giant vases in the town square.
