Roskilde Railway station

As we had the Copenhagen card that gave us FREE TRAVEL to Roskilde, and I had read there was plenty to see there, we decided to go there by Train.
It is very easy to reach Roskilde, as it is a major stop between Copenhagen and the regions of Denmark located to its west. The Train only takes approx 25mins to reach there.
Regional trains bound for Odense, Kalundborg or Nykobing Falster are your best choices (they are marked with a green "Re" sign on platform screens.

On arrival at the Roskilde Station, we found this building was quite historic. It was built in 1847, when the first railway between Copenhagen and Roskilde began operating.

Roskilde Train Station

By Train
The easiest way to reach Roskilde from Copenhagen is the train, lots of trains (usually every 30’, more during peak hours) and it takes only thirthy minutes to reach Roskilde.
Roskilde is on the General Copenhagen area, you need 7 zones on your zone card (you can also use a normal ticket but no one does as it turns out more expensive). You can also your 24h pass for all zones if you have one(the same one that can take you up to Helsingor etc)

The train station (pic 1) is the oldest railway station in Denmark still operating, it was built in 1847 to connect Roskilde with Copenhagen it is now a hub between Copenhagen and the west part of the country.

by car
Roskilde is 35km west of Copenhagen, just drive on road 21 and you’ll be there in 30’, then you’ll spend 30’ to find a parking space :)

by bus
there are long distance buses connecting Roskilde and other small or big towns (including Copenhagen of course) but it takes more time than train so we didn’t use any.

The city center is actually the area between the train station and the port so it was no problem for us just to walk around on foot. It will take no more than 10’ from the station to the cathedral, most of the museums are no more than 5’ from there while the port (Viking Museum etc) is 10’ away from the cathedral (downhill through the park).

But I guess renting a bike would also be a good idea, we saw some bike stores around. By bike you can reach some nice corners a bit further like the forest of Boserup (5km NW from the city)

We saw some local buses (pic 3) waiting outside the train station but we never used any of them but I guess they are helpful for some districts away from the center.

There are a lot of taxis too, you will see most of them also waiting outside the train station (pics 1&2).

It is very easy to walk around in Roskilde. The distances are rather short.
But if you consider staying in Roskilde for more than 2 days and if you don't travel by car you should rent a bike.
Jupiter Cykler is a Bike chain in Danmark. Their store in Roskilde is located between Stændertovet and Skomagergade. The bikes ain't for high speeding but they are stable.
It it is sunny weather you should try the beach at Veddelev or Herslev. The forrest of Roskilde lies next to the Sankt Hans Hospital, which lies next a old part of Roskilde, Sankt Jørgensbjerg. Skt. Jørgensbjerg is just 1 minut walk from the habour and vikingship museum.

If you are in good shape you should go to Lejre Forsøgscenter.

Roskilde is not a big town, and you can walk to most sights from the station within 30 minuttes. From the station to the Cathedral will take about 15 minuttes, and if you continue to the harbour it takes you 15 minuttes more.

It's very easy to get to Roskilde from Copenhagen. There's usually 2-4 trains every hour to Roskilde and it takes 20 - 30 minuttes to get there. You can bye a normal ticket or if you have zone cards you need 7 zones to Roskilde (stamp a yellow card once and a blue card twice = 7 zones)

when visiting copenhagen a great side trip is a visit to the historic village of roskilde. roskilde is on the main east-west train route and is only about a 30 min trip from copenhagen. trains leave the copenhagen central station about every half hour.

Coming to Roskilde by Car is easy, but there are some traps to look out for.

First, you should drive on road 21. Roskilde can be reached on ramp 9, 10 or 11. I recomend you take ramp 11 and continue straight ahead. That way you'll be lead into the city center on the northern side of the railway station. If you are going to the south side, turn left at the second stop after the ramp. That way you don't have to drive through the whole town just to get to the other side of the railway station.

The train is probably the easyest way of getting to Roskilde. The trains from Copenhagen to Odense goes through Roskilde, and there are some trains going directly from Kastrup (Copenhagen airport) to Roskilde.

Remember: On the webpage Copenhagen main central station is spelled København H
