The Roskilde Jars

by ginte

Roskilde's three giant jars stand almost in front of the Train Station. It's the first spot you'll see from the station. The sculpture of giant jars was made by the artist Peter Brandes and they are 5 metres high and weigh about 24 tons. According to the artist they symbolise life and death, as jars are used for storage of food and as urns.

Roskilde Cathedral (Roskilde Domkirke)

by ginte

The impressive red brick Cathedral is one of the most remarkable buildings in Denmark. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and this was Scandinavia's first Gothic cathedral. The World Heritage Committee has inscribed Roskilde Cathedral on the World Heritage List in 1995. Since the early 15th century the Cathedral has been the favourite burial place of the Royal Family.

Roskilde Cathedral

The Cathedral on the ridge at the very heart of Roskilde fjord cuts a prominent figure in the town and local landscape. Churches have been located on this spot for more than 1.000 years. In 1995, the Cathedral was added to UNESCO's list of the world's most precious cultural assets. The church is one of the earliest examples of French-inspired, Gothic brick architecture and the whole site constitutes a beautiful, harmonic unit.A little of Roskilde's pre-Reformation greatness was restored when it was designated the royal burial town. The Cathedral has never hosted coronations or royal weddings, however, and the actual burial ceremonies are also held elsewhere. Roskilde Cathedral became a mausoleum for the Danish royal family and reaped the benefits of the royal favours that accompanied its status. Magnificent sepulchres were interred in royal chapels and the building was properly...

Take a viking ship tour

by cfuentesm

This is really a lot of fun. Embark yourself in a real viking ship and sail around Roskilde. You will have to row in the old fashion style and learn how to manipulate the vessel. It's a terrific experience for all ages.

Oohhh YES!! You could think it's the typical touristic attraction..but you are wrong! Danes(not everyone, obviously!!) are ACTUALLY fond of their ancestors and their customs! So,a little for passion and a little for turism,in the Roskilde Harbour, custom and accurate viking ships regularly sail to make feel you how norsmen mastered the seas!!!Unfortunately I didn't try it becouse....it was the last dayand I had completely ended my money.. :(

The Viking Ship Museum!

by curiosone

I don't believe that you, during the looong evenings of Winter spent watching tv at home, have never heardabout the famous five viking ships found in the bay of Roskilde...The particularly characteristics of the water and climate have determined a good preservation of the ship frames with many other artifacts,as seaxes(log knives),shields and clothes...Thanks to this important discover, archaeologists were able to understand how norsmen built their excellent ships and how they use them. Not every ships are used for war acts:a pair of them are used for trading,,,in facts, not everyone knows that vikings were also really able merchants!Little but well organized museum;you will follow and ideal itinerary all around the five frame ships to understand(thanks nice "diorama"and miniaturized models, also)how norsmen conducted their battles..interesting!!!There is also a littel shop to buy...
