  • River Vidå

    Tønder Things to Do

The Vidå runs along the southern side of the old town and was once essential to the trade of Tønder. When the estuary of river Vidå began to sand down in the 17th century (probably due to the construction of dykes in the North Sea) and the river carried less water at all, sea trade became more difficult and the impostance of the town declined with...

    Tønder Favorites

Being close to the border of present-day Denmark and Germany, it is quite abvious that there has been a German influence on Tønder for centuries. Between 1864 and 1920, the town was even part of Germany (Prussia until 1871). Next to Latin and Danish inscriptions, you can still find many German ones at old houses and especially in the church. Until...

  • Ferry to Sylt from Rømø

    Rømø Transportation

To get to the nearby German island Sylt (In Danish; Sild), you have to take the ferry. It leaves from Havneby on the southern end of Rømø, and arrives at the town of List on Sylt. It leaves about every 1½ hour, and the trip takes 30 minutes. It is possible to bring your car, but I think the best way to explore Sylt is by bicycle. For a return...

    Rømø Warnings and Dangers

I never have written that something is expensive or so but Denmark shocked me a little bit. If you're coming just straight from Germany or Poland you may feel that prices here are higher than there. Or another thing - I thought that on island the prices for everything were a bit more than in other regions of Denmark. I don't say that you won't be...

    Rømø Things to Do

There are many parking points on the island where one can take some meal, rest or also take the tour into forest. Better to have the islands' map which are provided in tourist office or camping sites, so easier to orientate there. To spend time on the island and waiting for the seal tour, I took one of the trails. I don't know if there is allowed...

    Sønderborg Things to Do

Soenderborg is a small town but it has a nice waterfront. There is a brick castle, and it is worth walking around the outside because there are views across the water. We also liked the windmill that is nearby. Facing the water with the castle to your left, if you turn right you can walk along the waterfront. There are some nice and colurful...

    Sønderborg Restaurants

Colloseum is a little restaurant by the waterfront in Soenderborg. The food is cooked to order and was both very good and generous. We tried 'King Frederick's Favourite' - a creamy, mild curry. It was really nice. So much that we could not eat all of it, and the lady waitress kept asking us if we wanted her to bring more. An especially pleasant...

Most important for a religious settlement is the church of course. It is quite large and without any decoration, kept in simple white, which gives it a very light and open atmosphere. Skærbæk Things to Do

The church here is nothing special; it is like many other churches in Denmark. Inside you'll the usual medieval paintings. It is special to me though, because this is the church where I was christened and where I had my confirmation. Some of my relatives are also buried here.

By the seaside of Southern Als you can follow then Gendarm route on foot or on bike (although a terrain going bike will be helpful).
The routes name refers to its usage as a patroling route for the danish border gendarms all the way up to the 1950'ties where the patrol was motorised and the route abandoned.

    The cannons on the hill

by metteks Written Aug 4, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It was here at the hill of Dybbøl, Denmark lost the war to German in 1864.
The hill where the mill stood was a strategic defense point for Denmark. But the defense system was not well kept, so the Germans attack in 1864 ended after 34 days of battle with German victory.
The borderline between Denmark and Germany is then redrawn, and the result is that the Southern part of Jylland (to the river Kongeåen) becomes German. This means that many Danes are trapped in the wrong country and are forced to fight in the German wars against Denmark.
The border is redrawn to the current one in 1920, where German lost 1. world war.

Today the mill is rebuilt after it has been burned several times. In the mill you can see old photos of the battlefield. On the hill you can see the old cannons and there is a great view to the surrounding landscape.
