Shakespeare Comes to Danmark!

by lmkluque

Just up the coast from Copenhagen is Helsingor. The castle at Helsingor inspired Shakespeare and is the castle in his play, "Hamlet."Tours are offered but we chose to explore on our own. The snow on the ground around the shaded side of the castle surprised me. There were two moats to cross and the narrow windows--slits for guns or arrows--added to the feeling that this was well fortified place and safe to be in during an attack. The castle is called Kronborg Slot and is a bit outside of the town. However, it is full of history and not isolated to fame from Shakespeare. For more information about this historical castle see my Kronborg page.

Ny Carlberg Glyptotek

by lmkluque

While in Danmark, a visit to Copenhagen can be quite exciting and charming. A visit to Carlsberg Glyptotek is a must. In 1888 Carl and Ottilia Jacobsen--the owners of Carlsberg Brewery--with support from the Municipality of Copenhagen built the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek which was inaugerated 1897.The conservatory with it's classical and modern collections was open 1906 and to add charm an array of tropical plants flourish all year long. This is a smallish museum that offers a wonderful bit of history and sculpture, inside and out, that I enjoyed very much. There is no charge to enter. After a tour of this museum, you might go over to the Carelsberg Brewery for a tour and a taste.Read more on my Copenhage page.

Visit Skagen Museum

by lmkluque

SKAGEN MUSEUM is the most intimate art museum I've ever experienced. A wonderful show case for some of Danmark's talented artists, such as, P.S. Kroyer, Anna Ancher, Michael Ancher, three of my favorites. They have captured the beautiful play of light in Skagen and the reality of life/death in a fishing village vulnerable to some awesome, life robbing, storms. A great many of the paintings in Skagens Musuem depict the residents of Skagen, home scenes of the artists, and the love, labor and danger that was part of life for the local fishermen. A walk through the rooms of the Skagen Museum is better than any brochure about the town.Skagen

Two Currents Merging

by lmkluque

Not only was Skagen a summer colony for artists in the late 1800's, it also was a fascinating geographical site. Visit the beach of Skagen, called Grenen, at the northern most tip of Danmark, on the Island of Jutland, where the current of two seas, the Nord See and Kattegatt, can be seen to meet. It is amazing to watch the two currents overlap into each other, allowing one to see the exact spot one body of water ends and the other begins! Think of it! There are few places in the world such a sight can be seen and this is one of them.Read more about this on my Skagen page.

Helsingør (Elsinore)

by ant1606

Driving north of København is the city of Helsingør, or Elsinore in English. Ask Hamlet or Shakespeare about it.The imposing castle overlooks the narrow strait that separates Denmark from Sweden. On the other shore lays Helsingborg, ferry service takes you there in 15 minutes.A few centuries ago the Danes were in control of the strait and imposed tolls for all vessels in transit. This strategic point was later attacked and conquered by the Swedes. It is said that they encountered little or no resistance, and it is said that the reason for this easy victory is because the Danes were drunk. In fact there was no drinking water in Helsingoer and the Danish soldiers were entitled to receive 6 liters (ax. 6 quarts) of beer per day....Still today Denmark has one among the highest per capita beer consumption in the world.

Bike Trip to Southern Lolland

by Martin75

We took a short trip from where we live (Næstved) to Nysted, which is a little town on the southern shore of Lolland. From there you can see two of the largest offshore wind parks (Rødsand 1 & 2) in the world. The two parks consists of 162 windmills and can provide electricity to around 200.000 households. The picture is of a nearby place where you can see the secondlargest erratic in Denmark. The weight of this rock is around 700 ton.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen was a surprise: a joyful city, living with pleasure its integration with water. Travelling along the canals or walking along the streets, was really a great pleasure. Maybe a second visit in September... even quicker because time will be short for Bornholm.Yes, I was there again in September, in a short but very well planned visit that allowed me to have a look of a different are of the city. A few more tips are being added!

Lindholm Høje (Lindholm Hills): Viking site

by marielexoteria

This place is full of history - viking history. Lindholm Hills is a burial site and former viking settlement. It's located at an important crossing over the Limfjord, a stretch of water dividing Jutland, and it was an important trade center due to location. Excavations on this site started in 1889 but the major ones are from 1952, revealing 682 graves and artifacts. In late June they host their viking games. They have a museum but it's been close whenever I've visited. Here they hold the Midsummer celebration with a speech from the mayor (?) and the burn of a witch built only for this purpose.Information in English is available at: Visit Aalborg and here.

A 1000 year old Viking fortress

by Christina1881

Trelleborg in West Zealand is one of the places where the Viking period can be experienced at closest range. The remains of one of the big Viking ring fortresses constructed in about 980 AD are situated in a beautiful countryside. The fortress of Trelleborg near Slagelse in Western Zealand is part of the largest known defensive system of the vikings. Four nearly identical sites are known, clearly connected to Trelleborg, namely Aggersborg at the northern fringe of the Limfiord, Fyrkat near the city of Hobro, Nonnebakken in Odense and Trelleborg in Scania, southern Sweden. Of these, Aggersborg is by far the largest, while the Danish Trelleborg is the best preserved and the only one with a fortified outer court. The fortress of Trelleborg covers an area of approximately 15 acres. It is constructed as an inner and an outer court, situated between the Tude Stream and the Vaarby Stream, which...

Faaborg

by Sjalen

A delightful little seaside town, Faaborg in the south of Funen, is a town famous for its many artists. It is easy to see why, with the seaside light as well as hilly part of Funen nearby. The town itself is full of cheerful half timbered houses with pretty doors and from its harbour, you can catch ferries to seveal of the smaller islands to the south.
