Skagen

by lbhspatriot

Skagen (The Skaw) is a town in Nordjylland and what is special about it, is that it lies on the northernmost tip of the penninsula. And it is a regioun which projects waters between the North Sea and the straits of Denmar, so here you can experience two tidal waves clashing (Skagerrak and Kattegat). Skagen has many atributes that constitute its status as an internationaly known tourist destination, the tidal waves mentioned, a beautiful pictoresque coastal town, beautiful landmarks such as the "Den Tilsandede Kirke, the Skagen Lighthouse and the Bear museum - for those who just like me cherish the child within. Find more info on My Skagen Page

Saeby

by lbhspatriot

Saeby is located South of Skagen, on the East coast of Jutland Penninsula. We came along this place by chance... we needed petrol and stopped in a nearby gas station. What we say around us made us find a parking stop and explore the town for a couple hours! This is a perfect example of an idyllic sea town, which is a attractive holiday resort for different kind of tourist, ones like us travelling by car, but also those coming by a yacht. The marina is beautiful, the beach is clean and well adapted and the food there is divine (and not expensive which is surprising because it's Denmark we are talking about)The city is well know because of its landmark - The Lady from the Sea", which stands at the harbor between the two piers. It looks welcoming to all travelers, combined with the open sea, bidding sailors and the rising sun! This coastal town is rich in history and picturesque environment....

Hirtshals

by lbhspatriot

Hirtshals is a town in Region Nordjylland on the north coast of the island of Vendsyssel-Thy at the top of the Jutland peninsula. Its wonderfull location just on the North Sea makes it a great tourist destination - it has all! - fishing spots, ferry harbours, wonderfull beaches and amazing landmarks. You will not get bored here, I promise!First of all Hirsthals is the home of the North Sea Oceanarium (or The North Sea Museum). Which has one of the largest aquariums in Europe. the Nordsømuseet is a MUST SEE family attractioun and a great opportunity to spend a wonderfull day with.Apart from the oceanarium, the Hirsthals fyr is a popular landmark you should not miss. This is a 35 meter high lighthouse, with astounding views on the North Sea. The surroundings of the lighthouse are quite special and you can spend a whole day walking through the pathways, beaches or even have a picnic beside...

Limfjorden:

by lbhspatriot

The Limfjord is a shallow passage that separates the island of Vendsyssel-Thy from the rest of Jutland Peninsula. It extends from Thyborøn Channel on the North Sea to Kattegat. It is approximately 180 kilometres long and of an irregular shape with several bays, and islands, (ie Mors). Its main port is Aalborg, there are railways, road bridges and ferry passages , and also a tunnel built across Limfjorden. Limfjorden was originally connected with the North Sea but nowadays there is no direct passage because of a large sand build up.The area is best known for its tasty mussels and oysters which are considered to be of extraordinary size and quality. So if you are a sea food lover you have to try them! When you are in the Limfjordsmuseum is a special museum of fishing and shipping of the Limfjord. The Museum exhibits include equipment, models and pictures, and in the canal in front of the...

Skive

by lbhspatriot

Skive is a town in MidtJylland, it is a coastal resort that is a tourist destination thanks to its location - between the Karup River and wonderfull Skive Fjord (which is a part of bigger Limfjord). There are many things to do in Skive, one of them would be the amazing 14th century Spøttrup Castle, the Skive Kunstmuseum (Art muesum) with its modern design, it is a good location to visit the Mønsted Limestone Caves and the Hjerl Hede. For me Skive is a special town that makes me think of art - the streets are decorated with original and colorfull pieces of art that makes the town fun to tour, ie. all the roundabouts are decorated with pieces of art known as the 11 Stars, designed by the Danish designer.

Mønsted Limestone Mines

by lbhspatriot

Former limestone mine, now museum located to the North of the small town Mønsted, about 10 kilometres to the West of Viborg. The visit there was the highlight of my tour. Mønsted Limestone is the world's largest limestone quarry. The mines were working for several hundreds of years until 1953 when they were closed. They only reopened recently as a museum and... well, something else I will tell you later :) The mines are fairly extensive, there is approximately 60 kilometres of underground passages on several levels and some of them are enormous with tall, beautiful, almost cathedral-like rooms, others are so small that grown-ups must bend down to get through. There is a multimedia exposition in the mines, with wonderfull lighting, that takes you to a completely different world. It is located above the largest lake this show tells the story of the limestone and the mine, projected on the...

Hjerl Hede

by lbhspatriot

One of my favourite things to do in Jutland is the Hjerl Hede heritage park, located in Vinderup - half way between Viborg and Skive. This is a portrait of a Danish Village from the past, tourist are able to observe the old fashioned buildings, tools and people. This open-air museum is a historic record of the buildings, craft, trade and type of life you may have encountered in a typical Danish village between the years 1500 – 1900.The museum has more that 50 different buildings (school, baker, inn, a dairy, mill and farms!), the whole thing is completed with live animals such as sheep, geese and goats. This gives a beautiful portrait of rural surroundings. I enjoyed the whole visit to Hjerl Hede, but my favourite was when the "living history" started. That means that the museum "comes alive" with people dressed in old costumes performing some of the many activities that would have taken...

Esbjerg

by lbhspatriot

Esbjerg is a Danish seaport on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula, it is best known for its famous landmark - The Men at Sea (Mennesket ved Havet). This is a 9 metre monument of four men. It is located opposite to the Maritime Museum and Fsheries. Appart from seeing the sculpture you can take a walking tour around the city. There are many interesting promenades and beautiful streets that will constitute a nice afternoon. For those who enjoy shopping there are many nice shops in Esbjerg, where you can sometimes find a bargain. Also once you are in the city go to the Marina - we as amateur photographers found the industrial part of the marina most interesting.

Vadehavscentret

by lbhspatriot

The Vadehavscentret is a Wadden Sea Centre with an exhibition that tells you about the Wadden Sea - a cultural exhibition, a stork migration material, stories of great floods and drownings as well as a tidal wave yard and many others. This is not a big center with a huge exhibition, but you can get a joint ticket with the Mando Bus and it is definately worth it to go in there to get to know the area a bit better.

Wadden Sea

by lbhspatriot

The Wadden Sea is an intertidal zone in the southeastern part of the North Sea. It lies alongside the coast of Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. The Wadden Sea musuem in Denmark is located in Jylland and runs along the coast line from the German border to approximately Esbjerg city forming a shallow body of water with tidal flats and wetlands. It is rich in biological diversity and a UNESCO Heritage Site. It is a place for birdwatching as it has a great variety of different species that inhabit the Sea Coast, as well as a place for wondering and exploring. The amazing thing about the Vadehavet (as the Danes call the Wadden Sea) is it is shallow and you can walk into the sea without getting your ankles wet - keep in mind that it is muddy however. You can take a trip to the Wadden Sea on your own without a charge or use a Mando Bus that will take you on a long route through the Sea. It...
