Kastellet (Old Fortress), Copenhagen

by hopang

Kastellet (old citadel) is located on the northern part of the city of Copenhagen at Churchill Park near Langelinies and Little Mermaid. It is considered as one of the best preserved old citadels in Europe! Its layout is in the form of star shaped pentagram with five bastions on its sides. The five bastions are Kongens Bastion (King's Bastion), Dronningens Bastion (Queen's Bastion), Prinsens Bastion (Prince's Bastion), Princessens Bastion (Princess's Bastion) and Grevens Bastion (Earl's Bastion). The Citadel also consists of a church, a prison, a windmill and several prominent buildings within the wall.Kastellet was constructed by King Christian IV in the beginning of the 17th century to defend Copenhagen from attacks by invading forces. Today it is used by Danish military. The area around the Kastellet is certainly ideal for strolling especially from Nyhavn to the Little Mermaid at...

Kongens Nytorv (King's New Square), Copenhagen

by hopang

Kongens Nytorv (King's New Square) is located between Amalienborg Palace and Nyhavn in the heart of the city of Copenhagen. The King's New Square is one of the most beautiful squares in Copenhagen. It was designed by King Christian V in the 17th century with an equestrian statue of himself in the center with four statues below representing Queen Artemisia, Alexander the Great, Pallas Athena and Hercules. The square was reconstructed by King Frederik V in the middle of the 18th century. Many historical and famous buildings surround the square such as Hotel D'Angleterre (1795), Charlottenborg Palace, Royal Theatre (1872), Magasin du Nord department store and Thotts Palace which is now home to the French Embassy. Cobblestone streets with chairs for pedestrians to sit down and relax surround the square.

Resistence Museum

by Marthamaire

Copenhagen, DenmarkResistance Museum I try and see every Resistance Museum I can when I travel. The one in Copenhagen has no entry fee, which in my opinion should be standard. One of the most touching items was a letter written to the Museum by a man many years after his experience as a prisoner in a German camp. In that letter, he wrote that a copy of the famous postcard featuring Princess Margrethe “helped him to survive.” Another outstanding exhibit were photos and biographies of four Resistance leaders executed by the Germans. The “old man” of the group was 32 and the remaining three ranged from 19 to 21. The Third Reich is on the dust heap of history and the little Princess on the postcard is now the immensely popular Queen of Denmark.

Stroget, Copenhagen

by hopang

Stroget is a pedestrian shopping street located in the heart of Copenhagen. It is the longest pedestrian street in Europe stretching from Rådhuspladsen (Town Hall Square) to Kongens Torv (King's New Square). It has a total length of approximately two kilometers crisscrossing several streets such as Frederiksberggade, Gammel Torv, Nytorv, Nygade, Vimmelskaftet, Amagertorv and Ostergade. The pedestrian street was established in 1963. Today it is a very popular shopping district in the heart of Copenhagen. The pedestrian street is always crowded with pedestrians especially in the evenings during the summer months. Street entertainers entertaining visitors such as artists and gimmicks can be seen at the pedestrain street almost everyday. The street is ideal for strolling to escape the chaos of the city!

Amalienborg Palace, Copenhagen

by hopang

Amalienborg Palace is the main residence of Danish Royal family. It is located at Amalienborg Square in the heart of Copenhagen. The square is octagonal in shape and at the center of the square stands an equestrian statue of King Frederik V (1723 - 1766), the founder of Amalienborg Palace. The palace was designed by Niels Eigtev in honour of King Frederik V in the middle of the 18th century.Amalienborg Palace consists of four identical rococo mansions, each one facing the Amalienborg courtyard. The palace is regarded as the most spectacular piece of rococo architecture in Denmark! The domed structure as depicted on our photograph on top is Frederik's Church. Don't miss Amalienborg Palace when you visit Copenhagen on your vacation!

Little Mermaid, Copenhagen

by hopang

The statue of Little Mermaid is located on the shore of Langelinie, just a short distance from the main cruise pier. It is based on the fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. The statue of Little Mermaid was designed by Edward Eriksen in 1913 and was made of bronze. Today it is a symbol and landmark of Copenhagen as well as Denmark. However many foreign tourists are disappointed at what they see simply because the statue is comparatively small. It was and still is a victim of vandalism. On several occasions the limbs have to be replaced!

Aalborgtårnet (The Aalborg Tower)

by marielexoteria

This tower is constructed on a hill and offers a panorama view of Aalborg from a height of 105m. The tower itself is 55m tall and was constructed in 1933. At the top there's a restaurant with some newspaper pages about the construction of it (in Danish as far as I can remember). I don't think you're expected to buy anything there but we got some food. They also have a little souvenir shop. You get up there by an elevator and you pay an entrance fee of 25 DKK for an adult ticket and 15 DKK for a child's ticket.
