If you are in Denmark it is a good idea to rent a bicycle in the towns. Although there are some hills (not many though), it is fairly easy to ride a bicycle in the "flat land". There are special paths to ride bicycles beside the roads, and even bicycle lights (like traffic lights). It is also a good idea to ride bicycles between towns and see the beautiful, green, danish landscape.
I am so glad I went to Denmark in 1995, before the Store Baelt bridge was built. I was so upset in 1998 when upon my return the train just continued over the water on this undoubtedly fabulous bridge.Because before, the trains would actually roll onto a ferry! They would roll onto the ferry, which was equipped with big platforms inside, and you could get out, stroll about the decks, go back to the train if you wanted, look around the shops... but now, alas, that wonderful experience is gone. And now we have the Oresundsbron bridge between Copenhagen and Malmo. Spectacular, really. But I miss the old Danish experience of ferry after ferry. Denmark has become way smaller these past few years.
It's very easy to drive around Denmark. They have pretty dense net of highways, very little traffic (except for Copenhagen) and it won't take you more then few hours to get to any place you want. This is picture of the huge bridge connecting Fyn and Seeland islands. It cost 245 DKK to drive through it. And watch the weather before you go there, the bridge is closed when the wind is very strong.

In Denmark the public transportation is of high standards. DSB - the government owned - traincompany drives all over Denmark - and within a couple of hours you are able to get from Copenhagen to destinations in Fyn or Jylland! So if visiting the capital it is - easily - posible to visit other parts of the country!

In greater Copenhagen you can transfer freely between buses, trains and the New Metro using the same ticket and discount cards. Just keep within the zones your ticket is valid for. There are coloured maps that show you which zones there are.
if you happen to be in the mid/west of Jutland this is just a warning! The british railway company has taken over the trains here and they have had huge problems the past 3 months. The trains are often cancelled, or very late.so if you are gonna travel with Arriva be prepared to wait and wait and wait.if you wait long enough they might pay for a cab. Thats what happened to me last week when the train was cancelled from Struer to Aarhus.Routes with Arriva are for instance: Struer- AarhusStruer- Esbjerg.
The roads in Denmark are fantastic! With a decent bike one can easily go 30km/h... and as the islands aren't that big thats fast enough to get around(for me).btw. I think it's best to bring ones own bicycle or buy one as renting one can easily get more expensive...
It is so easy taking the ferry from Denmark to Sweden from Helsingor. It lasts only 20 minutes and there are least 2 per hour and the cost is reasonable as a passenger. There are places to eat on the ferry and plenty of places to sit, relax, and look out toward the strait. They take both Danish and Swedish crowns. There are more shops at the Sweden port, it's like a mini mall.

I got to Denmark by train from Hamburg. There are several EC trains during the day and the trip via Puttgarden and Rødby (with a short ferry trip in between) is quite fast (4 hours) but also rather expensive (w/o a German 'BahnCard'). And make sure you make a reservation because there are just 3 carriages per train. The public transportation on Zeeland is very good. And quite expensive too. I never took the car to get to Copenhagen because it is also expensive to pay for the car parking there if you are lucky to find one… The “København H” (the central station, on the picture) is in walking distance of many points of interest. The best idea for someone who uses the trains a lot and also wants to take the bus in Copenhagen is the “24 timer” (24h valid all over Zeeland).
