This is my favorite attraction in Hanstholm. The Lighthouse sits on top of the hill between the city and the harbour, and offers a fantastic view of the nature reserve to the south as well as the ocean to the west and north. The tower was build in 1843 and electrified as the first one in Denmark in 1889. At the time it was the strongest lighthouse...more
A lot of people come to Hanstholm to do some sport fishing. It's very easy to fish from the outer pier of the harbour, where there is always quite a few peolpe trying to get the catch of the day.Another option is to go on one of the tour boats that will take you to one of the banks outside Hanstholm. One of the best boats is M/S Thailand which has...more
The Church in Hanstholm is not very big and very traditional by Danish standards. This picture shows the altar in the back and the traditional "church ship" hanging from the ceiling. This ship is very common in Danish churches and is not just related to the maritime history of Hanstholm. I have heard a few different reasons for this tradition. The...more
This picture shows the view of the church and surroundings from the top of the Ligthhouse one crisp winter day.Somewhere near the leftmost window on the church you can find a centuries old picture of a boat. These boats were used for trade with Norway long ago and the picture now form the official shield of Hanstholm.more
The main attraction inside Hanstholm town is the huge WWII bunkers build by the Germans. It consists of 4 huge turrets with guns supposedly able to shoot half way to Norway, with a similar complex in Kristiansand covering the other half. The guns are gone now, so it leaves a little bit to the imagination, but the museum still gives you an amazing...more
Thats actually their motto, and it doesn't ryhme at all. The local inn is a strange place. It houses the only disco in town as well as the most hardcore local fishermen. It has a caged stage in classic "Road House" style with the occational stripper, and is famous for having strips on sunday mornings at 11 for the incomming Norwegians on the ferry. This place should be visited with some care, because drunken brawls are common, and sense is as unknown as soap on a fishing boat. It's uniquely Hanstholm.
Update: The Inn has lost it's liqouer license on account of not cooperating with the police, not having proper book keeping and just all round being a dive, so maybe this gem of Hanst-algia or Hanst-ericana might be gone... at least for now.
Gordon Inc. in "Hardcore 2000" about Hanstholm Kro "Steder kan vaere hardcore: Ser 48 timer paa Danmarkskanalen om Hanstholm Kro.
Dress Code: Dont look too smart. Don't look like a surfer either.
Maybe surprisingly there is an airport in Hanstholm with two daily connections to Copenhagen. The price is even very reasonable. You can get a stand-by ticket for 410 kr. one-way from/to Copenhagen. Recently the route has become a bit more popular, so it seems that you now risk not getting on with a stand-by ticket, especially Monday mornings....more
There is a new ferry company called Master Ferries starting a route from Hanstholm to Kristiansand in April. The trip will be less than 2 hours as they have bought the old Mols Line ferry previously sailing between Zealand and Jutland. As an opening offer it will be possible to buy a one way ticket for 9 to 79 dkk. Tickets go on sale in January, but...more
Amazingly this tiny town has a shopping centre. Although hardly Harrods, it still has quite a few shops and a couple of supermarkets, so when the weather is acting up, this might be a good place to go.
There's a 8 lane bowling alley as well, and this is also where you will find the local post office and banks.
As a general rule I would advice against doing drunk driving on the harbour. There's no fence or anything, so even normal driving should be done with some caution. These two poor fellas didn't make it out in time.
That's right. Why not get married in or around Hanstholm. The mayor will be more than happy to marry you on the beach, in a German WWII bunker, in the lighthouse or just in his office.
Update: Hanstholm will be merged with Thisted and Sydthy Municipality, so this mayor will be stepping down end of 2006.
