African Kitchen: A waft of Africa in the Baltics!
From the exterior, the African Kitchen looks like nothing special- an eatery on the outskirts of the Old Town at the end of a long road that you would otherwise have no reason to walk to. Walk through the door though and you are met with an exotic and appealing interior with a cosy bar and special African ambience- indeed many of the cooks are supposedly African ex-pats. The restaurant boasts a fantastic roof terrace. Finding your way to the terrace is somewhat problematic though! First you have to climb the stairs and duck so you do not bash your head on the door frame. Then a contortionist act is necessary to avoid the sloping roof as you make for the terrace door. Nevertheless the effort is worth it to eat in the outdoors on a sunny Tallinn day. The roof terrace is a great place to enjoy your meal in a chilled out setting. The staff and decor of the African Kitchen are great, however, I felt slightly let down by the food which I didn't find particularly special.
Favorite Dish: I ordered the Lamb African meatballs in Peri-Peri Sauce. The dish was served up professionally and with little waiting time, however, the quality of the food was not great. The lamb meatballs were tiny and the sauce reminded me more of a curry sauce. Nevertheless it was tasty and fairly good value for money.

African Kitchen: A Taste of Africa in the Frozen North
It's a bit touristy, and doesn't really feel all that African despite trying very hard. There's comfy fake animal skin cushions, leather covered menus, and South African radio piped to all parts of the restaurant, but it's so damned cold in Tallinn that an African themed restaurant doesn't feel right.
But they have good food, with a lot interesting options, at a reasonable price, and quite a few choices for vegetarians.
African Kitchen: African Food
The African Kitchen is located close to the Great Coast Gate on a street called Uus. I had never eaten African Food and was interested in sampling some. It turned out to be a great choice with an interesting and extensive menu of African inspired food leading to a very difficult decision for us. I finally settled on the Mruzia served with salad and crispy potato. (Chicken served in a pot with spices and spinach. My girlfriend chose Tiger Prawn Peri Peri with Coconut nice which was also delicious.
The interior of the bar/restaurant was very nicely designed with an African theme running throughout the place. An added bonus was the spacious sun-terrace.
The restaurant bar also has an extensive cocktail menu with an African twist. The cocktails are named after African countries. We had a Zimbabwe (Kalua, Baileys, and Rum) and a Rwanda (Strawberry, Banana Liqueur and Vodka) to finish the tasty meal.
Discovered by chance but one of the best places we ate in Tallinn, despite the less than attentive service. Waitress was a bit gruff but not enough to detract from the great food and ambiance.

The food was excellent. The set up of the restaurant made it very unique. We actually sat up in an attic. You could choose between sitting on pillows on the floor at a table. Walls were in full African motif with zebra and leopard print with many furnishings from Africa. This alone, is worth a visit. See photos.
Favorite Dish: African Chicken Curry, hummus- both were great. We tried about 5 other things, too.

African kitchen - a great venue, on the edge of the old town.
It does all kinds of meat from africa, some spicy.
Its reasonably priced, i had soup for 95 Kr which was huge and filling.
The best bit though is the decor, its a very cozy place and worth a look.
Olde Hansa - right in the centre of old town, next to town hall. Not very good-its got a medieval theme, ie-drinking beer out of gobletts, but the food was poor and the drinks/food expensive. dont try the beer with herbs unless u like your beer sweet!
African Kitchen: Great spicy, different flavored, food
Love the food here, one of my favorites in Tallinn, ESPECIALLY after a couple months of fried pork chops and boiled potatos !!!!
I don't know how authentic it is(never been to Africa)but it is unique and very good.
Price is "about average" for Old Town, which means "a little above average" for the rest of Tallinn.
African Kitchen: Africa in Estonia
Being South African it was a great surprise to see an African restaurant in Tallinn hence I drummed up a group and we explored our home cuisine.
The restaurants design is great - African paintings underlined with African music - a great ambiance.
The menu covers dishes from all parts of Africa and includes seafood, lamb, beef and chicken dishes.
An extensive cocktail, drinks and wine list with many surprises from South African wines to cocktails of the various African continents ensured that we left the restaurant well lubricated :-)
Favorite Dish: The Blue Mussels.... stunning with a bite... and the African Beef Curry :-)

African Kitchen: Bambara bar in Tallinn
Positive atmosphere, popular among low budget travellers. Coctail menu is big: one cocktail named after each African country -perfect place to study geography. Staff is serving with good attitude.
Favorite Dish: OK even there are no special gastronomical highlights here.

African Kitchen: African food in Tallinn's Old Town
I ate at African Kitchen with a friend during our visit to Tallinn in October 2005. The thought of African food in Estonia seemed somewhat incongruous, so we thought we'd give it a try!
African Kitchen has a very colourful interior, with traditional African art covering the dining area. The walls are painted with the sort of brightly coloured patterns that adorn the shields and masks of African tribes, while the seating has tiger skin covers on it. The door to the men's toilets displays a picture of an African warrior carrying a spear, while the door to the women's toilets displays a picture of an African lady carrying a barrel of water on her head.
While the decor is undisputably African, the same perhaps cannot be said for the cuisine. The menu offers a wide selection of food to suit all tastes but, with the possible exception of antelope meat, much of the menu appeared to be more international than African.
The menu includes:
Starters - crispy potatoes, chicken wings, meat based dishes;
Soups - fish, chicken, beef, Tunisian tomato, prawn;
Salads - orange salad, fish salad, chicken salad;
Vegetarian - vegetarian curry, black eyed peas, spinach, soya in peri-peri sauce;
Chicken - in peri-peri sauce, kebabs, chicken wings, with paprika;
Beef and Lamb - with peanut and coconut sauce, kebabs, curry, lamb couscous;
Fish and Prawns- fish curry, king prawns in peri-peri sauce, fish with white wine sauce and raisins, with coconut sauce;
Rice and Noodles - coconut rice, peanut rice, fried noodles with shrimps, chicken, fish;
Desserts - pancakes, chocolate eclairs, carrot cake, fruit and ice cream.
An online menu can be found here. However, the menu at the restaurant offered some dishes that do not appear on the online version.
The restaurant offers a large selection of hot and cold beverages, beers and spirits, a long cocktail menu and an impressive selection of wines.
Favorite Dish: The restaurant is popular with locals and there were several reserved tables when we visited late in the afternoon. It was starting to get busy as we left, so it might be necessary to book a table in the evenings.
The restaurant has live music and DJs on weekend nights.
I opted for:
Prawn Soup - Cost: 65 EEK
A tasty and slightly spicy soup. On such a cold day as the one when we visited, the fact that it was hot was all that mattered!
AK Fried Noodles - Cost: 80 EEK
Fried noodles with shrimps, chicken, green beans, peas, carrots and paprika. The noodles were nice enough, but they were certainly more Singapore-style than Senegalese!!
Pancakes with chocolate sauce - Cost: 30 EEK
Another choice that perhaps isn't a traditional African staple! A couple of pancakes with hot chocolate sauce and icing sugar.
Saku beer (500ml) - Cost: 35 EEK
"Libya" cocktail - Cost: 60+ EEK
The restaurant has an impressive cocktail list with cocktails named after many of the countries of Africa. To some extent, the ingredients reflect the colours of that nation's flag (for example, if the country's flag has green on it, then the cocktail contains apple juice). I opted for a "Libya" (a mixture of apple juice, cointreau, vodka, angostura bitters.....and various other alcoholic ingredients!), while my friend opted for an "Algeria".
A good choice of tasty food in a colourful African setting! The decor is more authentically African than the food is.....but that isn't a bad thing!!
African Kitchen: What A Cocktail List!
What can I say? It took half an hour to order everything. It took quite a while even to plough through the extensive cocktail list. That was before I even started looking at what there was to eat.
There are a choice of rooms to sit in - one that seemed to have been desined around the theme of zebras, there is the upstairs balcony and the main room with masks on the walls. We were in the main room with views of the kitchen through the glass windows. I have to say that they certainly had good food hygeine standards.
There was a very relaxed atmosphere and the background music was reggae which brought back memories of Ayia Napa in the early hours of the morning.
Favorite Dish: With about 25 different cocktails to choose from (with unfamiliar names so I had to peruse the whole list) I finally had to try the African Dream. It was the banana that I finally succumbed to. You don't often find half a fruit listed. Usually it will be a synthetic banana cream or liquer.
First course choice was restricted to three starters and three soups. I have to admit that I could have picked every single one of them and in the end chose African chicken wings (though I got to try the Wara too).
As for the main course, I again had trouble deciding because there was only 1 dish that didn't tempt me. I ended up with Tiger prawn pilipili. Those who know my food taste will realise that it came down to the spiciness of the dish (two chillis)!
Oddly enough I had no room for dessert (even though the words carrot and ginger in the same dessert made by taste buds water!)
Instead I finished off with tea, though not just any tea! I had Black Cactus as I had never tried it before.
I have to admit that I would eat both of the dishes again but if I went again I would have to try the runners up and see how they compare!
