    Balthasar: Garlic with Medieval Flair

by tericee Updated Apr 4, 2011

Balthasar is, a great place for garlic lovers. The menu describes the strength of the garlic in each entree with pictures of one, two, or three garlic cloves.

Balthasar, named after a medieval-era chronicler from Tallinn, shares a building with Tallin's 13th century pharmacy. The place has original beams, floorboards and windows looking out across Estonia’s most famous cobblestone marketplace.

The door is through the archway...

The Garlic Restaurant Balthasar: Fancy some garlic?

Our first night in the awesome city of Tallinn, after having explored the Old Town, Vanalinn, for a while and we headed for a meal. Balthasar was on our list before coming because we knew it existed: we love garlic.

The house it was set in was beautiful and the outdoor terrace lovely. You could see people popping their heads in just to see what the inner yard was like and you could touch the old details everywhere. The restaurant is situated in an old Town Hall Apothecary and for the house itself I would recommend a visit.

Favorite Dish: You can get all their meals in different levels of garlic-iness. I enjoyed their meals a lot but liked their beed better than their pork.

    Balthasar: Balthasar .. Garlic-icious

There is a danger that in describing somewhere as a "Garlic Restaurant" it is made to sound rather gimmicky and that somehow the gimmick will surpass the cooking. Nothing, however, could be further from the truth with Balthasar, Tallinn's Garlic Restaurant.

Firstly the setting is fantastic, the restaurant is situated on the first floor above Rae apteek with lovely views over the square and towards the Town Hall. It is rather like being in a country manor dining room, wooden beams and floor, ornate chairs, fresh white linen, subdued and subtle lighting. There were very few people in the restaurant when we visited, reflective of it being a freezing Sunday night in winter rather than the standard of the restaurant, so the atmosphere was quiet and intimate. Service too was very good, attentive and helpful but without being overbearing.

As to the food, which reflects an international cuisine, it was excellent. On the menu each dish is given a bulb rating - 3 or above and you better not have any vampire blood in you! There is a good selection of starters, soup, meat and fish dishes plus a vegetarian option. Also you can order garlic side dishes including the wonderful "garlic assortment", a pile of cloves in 4 different marinades, pesto, chilli, vinegar and spice. Also don't leave before trying the garlic ice cream, which comes in a crisp almond basket and chocolate sauce. Like the creamiest ice cream you?ve ever had but with a hint of sweet garlic - sounds strange, tastes delicious!

Favorite Dish: 3 types of Complimentary bread plus garlic cream
    Garlic assortment

Gratinated scallops and mushrooms - a lovely mix of flavours
Garlic Soup with Salmon Flakes - very rich, very creamy, very moorish!

Fried Flounder, Potato Croquettes, stir fried vegetables and garlic sauce - very well cooked and a great balance of flavours
Pork Noisettes, red wine and thyme sauce, garlic potatoes and vegetables - a feast for carnivores!

Garlic ice cream - Oh so nice!

One beer, one sherry, one glass of wine, 2 vodkas, one espresso coffee

    1050 EEK including service - 45.97 sterling.

Don't worry about having a lonely rest of the evening, even though this is a garlic restaurant. Fresh garlic used with skill doesn't make your breath smell at all, and can hardly be recognised as garlic in your dishes.

The restaurant, situated in an original setting (in the same building as the Raeapteek), is very cosy. Meals are not inexpensive but very good and in sufficiently big servings. Really a very nice place for a bit more fancy dinner and a taste of the finer cuisine.

Best make reservations during weekends and when in the tourist season (i.e. when there are a lot of people around :-)
