An excellent place for a special meal at vey reasonable prices. Main courses started at 12 € and included roast beef, roast pork & sauerkraut, wild boar and a good selection of other traditional dishes. Our starters were meatballs and horseradish, and a goat's cheese salad. We had an excellent meal at this restaurant located in the centre of the old town. When we were there itwas busy with local diners, however it is also popular with vistors, including Hilary Clinton.

Favorite Dish: Traditional food is what they serve here and the roast pork with sauerkraut was excellent.

This is food just like Grandma used to make, at least if you are Estonian. The food is traditional, hearty dishes, served up in a dark, cozy cellar, with wall paper and furniture from early last century, and music that only grandparents could like. You are even served by old women with shaky hands.

It's great, and highly recommended. Friendly service - the kindly old ladies make for a refreshing change from the beautiful, but often hard nosed, waitresses you get elsewhere in Tallinn. And the food is amazing. They even have vegetarian options, like the fantastic goat cheese and potato casserole that I ordered.

Favorite Dish: Goat cheese and potato casserole.

Vanaema means greandmother and that's what the style of their food is: traditional Estonian food just like Mum or Grandma used to make it. They hired old Estonian housewives as cooks who know the traditional recipes and kitchen tricks. The result is delicious.

This restaurant is well known also among locals and always full. Prebook a table.

Favorite Dish: I had a beef fillet in plum and apple sauce with mixed vegetables and potatoes. The fillet was HUGE and perfectly fried the way I wanted it. Only point to criticize: I would have liked a bit more of that tasty plum sauce with the meat...

Restaurant Grandma`s Place (Vanaema Juures) is very couzy and comfy restaurant in old town on Tallinn, Estonia. The waitresses are good-natured and competent, the cooks make very tasty dishes!
The restaurant offers Estonian food.. E.g. you can find in the menu beef-fillet, baked pork, sauerkraut. The menu consists also vegetarian dishes! And for dessert you can have Kama (A dish prepared from a mixture of rye-, oat-, barley- and pea meal by mixing it with sour milk).
I think that this restaurant is one of the best where you can have real Estonian food..
And when you sit in the restaurant.. then it feels like you are at your grandmother`s house and can eat dishes that she have made.

Favorite Dish: Beef-fillet with apple-plum sauce.

Rataskaevu - and the Cat's Well

As the name implies (Grandmas's Place is the English translation of Vanaema Juures) the food served at this Old Town restaurant is basically good home cooking. Good it certainly is, but I think Grandma has been updating her cookbooks - this is certainly more contemporary fare than my Grandmother ever cooked. The dishes are all based on traditional Estonian dishes however, with plenty of pork (and wild boar), winter berries and mushrooms on the menu as well as more of those memorable potatoes, and the decor is definitely straight from Granny's era - as is the background music. It's all a bit of a trip down memory lane for those of us old enough to have Grandmas whose homes harked back to pre-war days - and, for those who are younger .... a glimpse of a pre-Ikea Nordic lifestyle.

The restaurant is very popular with locals and visitors alike- and is obviously considered to offer a sufficiently authentic Estonian experience for Hilary Clinton to have been brought here when she was in Tallinn. Summertime bookings are advisable.

Favorite Dish: MrL loves a good blood pudding, and the one here - served with redcurrant jelly, sauerkraut and fried potatoes really passed his taste test. A very good venison stew pleased me and we both enjoyed the berry and cream-filled pancakes.

Vanaema juures: Just like granny's home cooking

    by RACCOON1 Written Oct 9, 2004 602 reviews

The name of the restaurant means "At Granny's place" or 'Chez Grandmere". From the dark wood buffets and China cabinets to the photos on the wall to the waitress who is always checking how granny is doing in the kitchen, this homey and cheerful place will leave you full and happy. The food is good solid home cooking, well done, no false modern moves.
