Now a whizzy hotel, these three 15-th century merchants' houses have long been famous. They are called the 'three sisters' because each is slightly smaller than its neighbour.
There are loading hatches and winches set into the frontages, because these typically
Tallinn-ian houses served as warehouse, offices and living quarters for the merchant families who owned them.
It's not easy to take a photo as the street is so narrow (and it was pouring with rain when I visited), but hopefully it will give you an idea.
The front door dates from 1651, so deserved a photo of its own (there's a rather raunchy half-naked lady involved).
These buildings are very good examples of medieval residential buildings in Tallinn. They were built in 14th century. It is interesting, that Tallinn has the houses of three sisters and Latvian capital Riga has three brothers’ houses.
Now it is a very luxurious hotel inside, where modern things are combined with medieval elements. I have heard that United Kingdom Queen Elizabeth II stayed here when visiting Tallinn.
Tallinn’s old town is on the list of UNESCO cultural world heritage. So, it’s easy to find older buildings while walking in the old town. Three of them are called the “Three Sisters”, three old merchant’s warehouses located in the north of the old town. Unfortunately, in a place like Tallinn, the buildings are not that spectacular so that you may oversee them on your way through the old town… Just look out for a high-class hotel which also bears the name “Three Sisters”.
When I was reading about Three brothers buildings in Riga I catch that Tallinn has the almost the same building complex with name ‘Three sisters’. I was so curious that I needed to take photo with it. The three building complex was built on the 14th century, nowadays they are joined together and here’s located five star hotel.
