Kuremae

Kuremae Nunnery, the most popular tourist sight of Ida-Viru County, is the only functioning nunnery in Estonia. Puhtitsa Orthodox Nunnery, present Kuremae Nunnery, was established in 1891 by prince Sergei Dahhovsky. The Kuremae cloister gives a lodging for a night to visitors. At present there are 154 nuns, active in agriculture and animal breeding. Around Kuremae there are a number of places connected with both Slavonic and Estonian legends, such as the sacred spring at the foot of a hill and secular oak, under this tree – as the legend says – liked to rest Kalevipoeg. (A hero of national epos.) Local people believe that the spring water and the oak bark have medicinal properties. This village – is the place, where nature and man have met and now they are living in harmony!
