Paide is a convenient place to break a journey from Tallinn to Tartu. The small town has a castle originally dating from the 13th century (but which has suffered a lot since then). There is a rather attractive central square with its Town Hall, first built as a house in the 1820s then extended in the early 20th century, and around the square are various streets of wooden houses. The small and endearing regional Järvamaa Muuseum gives an interesting insight into local life in the 19th century and, for that matter, in the Soviet era. One of its founders donated the contents of a chemist's shop originally dating from the 1790s. The waxwork of the pharmacist is startlingly lifelike!
