The old village pub of Altja ia a wooden building with a thatched roof. The interior is plain and dark, you sit on simple wooden benches to enjoy traditional local dishes. The quality of the food is very good. Here you get the kind of food Estonian mothers in the countryside used to make for their families.
The tavern has become a bit of a tourist hotspot, many tour groups stop here for lunch during their visit to Lahemaa National Park. Prebooking a table is highly recommended if you are with a larger group.
The menu is available in English, which is useful.
Favorite Dish: Mulkipuder - a kind of potato mash with sauerkraut and little pieces of pork, served with either herring fillets or mushroom sauce (fresh mushrooms from the forest, it was the season) and pickled vegetables. Plain and tasty. All great things are simple!

This is old Estonian pub style eating place. Local food, reasonable prices (comparing to Tallinn) but expensive comparing to local prices.
Favorite Dish: Fish dishes.

Altja is now a small place, many of its wooden buildings used as summer homes by locals. Once, it supported three taverns: there is still one there, a popular stop-off for visitors during the summer...
