This huge (7 tons) ox was sculpted by one of the most popular contemporary estonian artsist - Tauno Kangro, and it is supposed to commemorate the time when Rakvere was first given the Lybeck city rights back in the beginning of the 13th century.
Well, anyways, it's a really nice sculpture right next to the stronghold ruins.

The ruins, which are actually not that ruined at all ;), as you can see from the picture, are usually the main reason for visitors coming to Rakvere. You can have a great view from the top of the mountain where the stronghold stood, look around between the ancient walls, visit the museum, see a performance and so on...

Not far from the castle you can find the Statue of an Aurochs after which the ancient name of Rakvere came into being. The statue was opened on June 15th, 2002 to celebrate the passing of 700 years since Rakvere got the town rights.
The statue was made by very famous Estonian sculptor Tauno Kangro.
The height of the statue is 3,5 m, length 7,1 m, space between the horns 3,4 m, weight 7000 kg.
On the base of the statue there is the coat-of-arms of Rakvere, on the sides a short history in all the languages of the former owners of the stronghold and the names of those who supported the creation of the statue.

During the summertime, the Rakvere Stonecastle ruins are used for open-air theater. If you happen to be in Estonia during the summer and care for theater, you can have a fantastic experience over there!

The Rakvere stonecastle was first mentioned in the Latvian's Henrik Chronicle of Livonia in 1226 at which time the town, ruled by Danes, was called Wesenberg. The town was freed by the Danish king in 1302. Afterwards the castle was under German, Russian, Swedish and Polish rule for about 400 years and it was finally destroyed in the 17th century.
