Haapsalu is a centre of knitting and their most famous products are fine, lace-like scarves. These scarves are made from very thin wool and can be pulled through a ring, they say - I have not yet tried with mine but it might work. They come in many different patterns.
In a building along the Swedish Market, address Ehte 4, you can see a small exhibition on Haapsalu scarves, the different patterns etc. They even have bridal dresses knitted in the traditional patterns on display - marvelous.
The building also contains some arts and crafts shops where you can buy the scarves and other local artisans' products of excellent quality. The price for a scarf is, depending on pattern and size, in the range of 650 to 850 EEK (2009), which is not much for elaborate handicraft like this.

It is now tradition to have this festival in Haapsalu.
The first festival took place in 1998 and continued every year. Pyrotechnics from all over the world are showing their art and a lot of famous artists are coming to look after the musical part of this festival. Last year we had Robert Plant visiting Haapsalu.

Haapsalu is one of the oldest towns in Estonia . It's built on a peninsula that formed from many smal islands- wherever you go you would reach the sea. That's why sometimes it's called Nordic Venice....
