vasknarva (estonian for waterfall) was since 12th century,the guardian of the river route into narva at the northern end of lake peipsi (nothing to see with pepsi!).
after the russian victory ,the need for a stronghold waned,and vasknarva began to fall...
with estonian independence its geography has once again made it part of a trade route:north-south commercial axis but also contraband western goods eastward...

the only eastern orthodox nunnery in the baltic states,built on a site sacred since 16th century when a peasant saw a vision of the virgin mary on the top of a hill...
with soviet occupation buildings begun to deteriorate and in 1961 the convent was nearly closed.....but a change in moscow attitude toward religion has saved its life...
today more than 100 nuns...

Visit orthodox villages on the coast to narva river. You mast drive circle to Kuremäe (unique working orthodox monastery open for tourists) and Vasknarva (old orthodox village with monastery) and then upwards to Narva. The road to Narva is closed and will end with hundreds of years old wood under protection called Poruni Protection Area.

Even when exploring the fortress, you can still miss this thing. Well, it's quite big and if you have plenty of time, you won't go wide. This is a sculpture of Lenin, which earlier stood on the central square of the city. After 1991, when communism was fallen and banned, Lenin statues all over the state were destroyed or hidden. This one is hidden inside the fortress, but you can freely take picture of yourself next to this evil genius of XX century...

A: Estonian railway company just canceled the only Tallinn-St.Petersburg train recently (after September only Tallinn-Moscow train left), so you can't use the train on this...
