There has been another bridge in this site before, but it was destroyed in the WW II, and it was a symbol of Tartu. We didn't find this present bridge anything special, though in the evening light it looked nicer. It is a custom that students walk over the arch (we actually saw one young man walking there) as an act of braveness. Stupidity I would say! I read that there are plans to replace this bridge with another one which would be the duplicate of the orginal one.

Tartu is known from 1030 under name Juriev. In 1224-1893 its official name was Derpt. In 1625 it was passed to Sweden, in 1721 - to Russia. In 1893-1919 - Juriev; from 1919 - Tartu in structure of Estonia. Peter and Paul's Gothic cathedral (13-15 centuries) and church Jaani (middle of 14), in style of classicism - a town hall (18 century).
During Soviet times this city was one of few cities of the USSR where it was possible to feel Europe. It involved numerous tourists. Old streets of Tartu passed an atmosphere of medieval city. I took a pleasure of this atmosphere in 1991.
Sorry for bad quality of my pics...

tartu train station is very old and quite run down, but also a very nice historic building.
it looks like something out of a western movie with it's wooden structure.
it's worth passing by there when in tartu.

Behind the Town Hall and the university lies a big park that is very much worth a visit. It has a "Kissing Mountain", an observatory, an old hospital, a church ruin and lots of other stuff to look at. Take a look at the pictures I have put with this tip.

This guy born in Riga and studied in Tartu. Hi was an Estonian poet and his aim was to found original Estonian literature. But his famous action was hiking from Tartu to Riga. Probably that’s why his life was so short (1801-1822).
