Tartu Bus Station

Buses go between Tartu and Tallinn about every half an hour every day. The direct Express bus takes about 2 and a quarter hours. A single ticket costs 140 krooni (as at February 2008) and can be bought either on the bus or from the ticket office beforehand.

The buses can get quite full so I'd advise getting the ticket beforehand to make sure you get on the bus. The tickets also have a seat number on them though not everyone pays attention to this.

A useful thing to know is that the bus goes right by Tallinn Airport so if you are flying out directly after a visit to Tartu ask the driver to drop you off there rather than having to come back out on a local bus.

Bus Tallinn-Tartu-Tallinn

Then visiting Estonia, I decided to visit not only Tallinn, but Tartu also. I counted that it is possible normally to make daytrip to Tartu. The bus Tallinn-Tartu takes about 2,5 hour, buses go every half hour, so it looks it is no need to watch schedules. The cost of price varies from 125 to 140 Estonian croons.

I was quite surprised to see drinks and food menu at bus and a girl that serves it, as I never seen someone serving bus in Lithuania and other foreign countries before. That is more, there was not so long distance to\from Tartu.

Railway station building

The most comfortable way to get Tartu is by car. So get bus to go there. I went from Tallinn and it took 2 hours around one way. The price is EEK 80-100 (EUR 4-5). Better choice is SEBE company, they have 2-floors busses. I was lucky to have the place in front of the window in the first floor and enjoy view around over the trip. It is possible to come to the town by train. in this way you can see the old railway station wooden building (see the photo).

The bus terminal

It takes 2,5 hours to get to Tartu from Tallinn by bus. The bus station is located at Turu 2, tel. 00 372 7331 277, in a downtown. Domestic routes are inexpensive. Information about schedules: www.bussireisid.ee

An old bus in Tallinn 1990

We arrived in Tallinn and had still 180 km ahead of us before we were in Tartu. We took a taxi to the bus station (bussijaam) and bought the tickets. There is a bus from Tallinn to Tartu every 30 minutes and the single ticket costs about € 6,-. The trip takes 2,5 hours and to Tartu the bus was not very good, and it was very hot on it. On the way back the bus was as good as any bus in Finland and the journey was comfortable. Scenery is bit dull, forest and flat land.

HYDROFOIL BOAT

There are several boatlines travelling between Helsinki and Tallinn daily. Because of the competition the prices are reasonable. For a return trip we paid €44 each. As we are no lovers of boat journeys we chose hydrofoil boat, whcih takes only 1 hr and 40 mins.

Some of the lines are:
Tallink (www.tallink.fi/www.tallink.ee)
Eckerö Line (www.eckeroline.fi)
Linda Line (www.lindaline.fi)
Viking Line (www.vikingline.fi)
Silja Line (www.silja.fi)
Nordic Jet Line
Sea Wind Line (www.seawind.fi)

This time we chose Nordic Jet Line

Frequent Buses

The Tartu Autobussijaam, located between the outdoor market and the city center (which is a short walk up the river), is one of the major bus centers in Estonia. Buses run to and from Tallinn either hourly or half-hourly all day. It is also easy to catch buses to Parnu and Narva. Eurolines offers a bus connection to Riga and St. Petersberg. Timetables are located inside the bus station.
