Make sure you spend time...

by DesertRat

Make sure you spend time wandering around the cobblestone streets of the Old Town.Tallinn's Old Town is a magical place. It somehow reminded me of the old nursery rhyme about the crooked house. This shot was -- as far as I can recall -- taken in a side street next to the Town Hall.

Make sure you take a close look at the 19th Century Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Even if you never get to St. Petersburg or Moscow, this fine church will give you a feel for Russian Orthodox places of worship.

by barcodex

Paying attention to Tallinn's churches, do not forget about the churches in smaller towns - they really were the centers of Estonian life during the last centuries. This one was shot by our camera in Rapla. These churches are usually very simple both inside and outside (Estonians are protestant nation), but they are pretty.

by barcodex

Try to visit smaller towns like Viljandi. They are green, fairly small and quiet, looking like big villages rather than towns. On the photo you see me standing next to ruins of an old castle of Viljandi, and a small fragment of Viljandi Lake, that has a great scenery around itself.Take a boat ride on the surface of Viljandi Lake, you will be rewarded! This lake is one of the most beautiful in central Estonia, and it is famous not only among the beauty-lovers. Every sporty person in Estonia has heard about (or maybe even participated in) the Viljandi 'around-the-lake' cross. It is held annualy, and most significant athletes from Estonia and nearest countries takes their place in it. And it is an off-road distance! On the coast of the lake where the town resides, you can find a memorial of all crosses of the past, with the names of winners.

Taste Estonian beers.

by barcodex

If you're a beer person, you will find Estonia a right place for you. We have 4 big breweries in a country with a population of less than 1,5 million. Beer is very respected in our country, and not only Estonian sorts - you can find different sorts of imported beer, if you will find Estonian ones out of your taste. But I did not yet meet a beer-drinking foreigner who refused to drink our beer! ;)As you can see on the picture, beer 'SAKU ON ICE' is attractive even for insects :)

Go to Islands. There are some...

by barcodex

Go to Islands. There are some islands west to main Estonian lands. With Aland, Jutland and Gotland, Estonian islands form an 'archipelago' of Baltic islands. These lands mostly were under Swedish control during the history, many towns and villages on Estonian Islands have alternative names in Swedish. Nature of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa is something different from the nature of Continental Estonia. Density of population on Saaremaa and Hiiumaa is much smaller, nature is wilder and cleaner, and islanders themselves are slightly different - they have their own dialect and their own opinion about people of Tallinn...When visiting Saaremaa, you could locate a place where the meteorit fell down to Earth's surface. there is a small lake on that place right now. I will add more exact information about it later...

Go South!

by barcodex

Southern Estonia is quite different from Northern - hilly, with more leaf trees (Northern is mostly covered by pine forests), with people that speak slightly another language. Most Estonians think that even girls are prettier in the South. Anyway, you should go to Haanja to 'climb' on the highest point of the Baltics- Suur Munamägi. To make this point even higher, this watching tower were built. It is worth visit because of nice interior, a bar in the cellar I mentioned above, and a splendid view from the top of it.

Go out! The weather is not so...

by barcodex

Go out! The weather is not so pleasant in our places to miss an oportunity to go out. When the sun shines - take a car and move outside the city, to the green happiness of Estonian nature. You can take a grill device like this with you. Buy coal ('süsi'), coal-burning liquid ('süsivedelik'), and some sausages ('viinerid') to grill right on a petrol station ('tankla'), and you will notice that you are hungry even before you grill them ;)

Windmills. Windmills are...

by barcodex

Windmills. Windmills are generally rare in Estonia - maybe because our land is not so generous and there is no need to mill grain in many places... Windmill is a symbol of status of a rich farm. They were also often combined with a tavern if they stood near the road. This windmill is also combined with a restaurant.

by barcodex

Estonian Hollywood. Well, no movies are filmed there, it's just a joke from people who would like to have their own Hollywood. This hill is at least ten times smaller than the original Hollywood hill with the letters, but it quite similar anyway, and it provides a nice mood for a whole day after you see it.
