Hundijalg Ollehoov: Best Grill in town
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This place is known not only across town, but also in Tartu, 45 minutes away. They serve grilled meats straight off the fire beside the bar - you know what you're getting. It's delicious, spicy and goes well with a cold beer that they also serve plenty of.

As I am a vegetarian, I had garlic bread and a salad, which was delicious. i'll give 'em that.

Olle no. 17: Estonian pub grub
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This lovely place is supposed to be an Irish pub, but thankfully fails miserably because as itself, it's a workable blend of Estonian and American style pub food. Interior is spacious, the window seats afford a beautiful view of the charming main street of V?ru, the music is inoffensive and they have sports on the TV sometimes if you like that sort of thing. When we were in today, the weather was glorious so the pub had it's share of day-tripping customers, including a large happy table of Finns. In any case, our food came out relatively quickly (the speed in which you are happy with, as it usually means it's not microwaved) and it was absolutely better than adequate. I had a cheese omelette and traditional Estonian garlic bread (deep fried black bread rubbed in garlic) my little boy had the usual wiener and potatoes, and fellow VTer King_Golo had a burger. We had a few beverages and it certainly turned out to be quite good value at 9 or 10 euro total. V?ru is definately cheaper than Tartu....

I didn't try it, but the cheese soup with wild mushroom looked fabulous.... their traditional Estonian garlic bread is excellent.

Jaagumäe Keskus Kpl. Nurmenukk: Many Salads
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a great place to eat very good local dishes for a very good price.
Many dishes are available, but you must ask them in estonian as they appear in the menu.
Fresh salads and bread are included in the price!
In the same building you find a supermarket located above the restaurant.

Paula Cafe: Shelter from the Rain!
  • Satisfaction:
  • This place is nothing fancy, infact it is very simple. A big counter with bakery goods lining the shelfs. There are a few small tables in the corner and along the windows. The baked goods give the room a wonderful smell. I am sure the fact that I was soaked with rain made the place that much more appealing, but every town needs a great place to get out of the unavoidable weather situations. Low prices made it easy to sit for a while and enjoy some tea while drying off.
