    Tallinn Warnings and Dangers

Tallinn seems to be a quite save destination for travellers. You need common sense like every else in the world; and like in many other places of our world there are sick people. West of Toompea Hill in Toompark there is an old, declining sports field. This seems to be a favourite place for the local junkies to satisfy their addiction. Be...

  • Taxis

    Tallinn Warnings and Dangers

We were warned and told to use only Tallink taxis (which are mainly yellow) because some other taxis propably will cheet you. So when we needed a taxi we took a Tallink taxi from a station nearby Viru Hotel to Tallink Spa hotel. The price was 9,20 Euros. Other people took a taxi from another company at the corner of City Portus Hotel near by...

  • Pickpockets

    Tallinn Warnings and Dangers

There are enough warnings about pick-pockets and bag snatchers around the town that you really should be on your guard, but don't be paranoid. It's a safe city, and as long as you aren't stupidly flashing your money around you should be ok. There's almost no violent crime here either, so unless you go looking for trouble, you probably won't find...

  • Walk Hazards

    Tallinn Warnings and Dangers

We visited Tallinn in mid December, after they had already experienced heavy snow and the pavements were treacherous. Of course, the snow itself isn't the problem, but once it has been compressed, partially melted and refrozen, it solidifies into sheet ice which is like glass underfoot (and difficult to identify in poor light). We wore walking...

    Tallinn Warnings and Dangers

In the high season (June to August) many ferriesof different companies serve the route between Helsinki and Tallinn. Please keep in mind that depending on bookings the ferry timetables might be changed on short notice. Ferries might either be cancelled or departures might be put off. Make sure that you always check your ferry departure well in...

  • Rain!

    Tallinn Warnings and Dangers

I was in Tallin in late June, but still there was heavy rain for a whole day. Of course it's not a real danger, more of a warning actually. You miss out on the beautiful colours of Tallin, but at least you don't have the supersonic guided tours from the cruise ships!

  • Air Baltic Airlines warning

This is a travel warning to use Air Baltic Airlines flying to Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia or other destinations. This company, although it charges fairly high prices, has the quality of a low-cost airline, and much worse. In contrast to any other airline I know, one has to pay an EXTRA CHARGE of 30 Euros for 1 piece of check-in-luggage (no matter...

  • Beware of triple-prices Taxi drivers

Some taxi-drivers ask triple prices to drive most popular tourist marsroutes like from Airport to city center or from harbor to Old Town. It´seven bad cases when the taxi costs even 5 times more than usual. It´s good to know how much the taxi usually costs in Estonia. For example, from Olümpia hotel to harbor You must pay approximately 60 EEK not...

  • Taxi drivers

Although the control is quite strict, there are still few taxi drivers who try to cheat people - not only tourists, but locals also. Note that all drivers must have prices on their car, must have the taximeter in a viewable place and they must give you a recipe if you ask for that. Unfortunately there are no taxi companies I can suggest for sure....

  • Canadians do NOT require a visa!

Lonely Planet's guide to Finland, for some reason, states that 'most visitors to Estonia do not require visas, except Canadians.' Nonsense! I am a Canadian, and I can tell you from first-hand experience that Canadians do NOT require visas to visit Estonia. I don't where they got their misinformation, but it's just not true.

  • Don't slip up!

I know this sounds like common sense, but I'll write it anyway. The roads out of the old town in Tallinn can be fairly steep and in the winter (I visited in Dec and Jan) they became very slippery to the point that locals and visitors alike were doing some nifty footwork to get along. Good, grippy footwear required!

  • Easy with the picture taking

My wonderful tour guide Kristii took me to a local Russian market. (I'll need to get the address) EVERYthing is available here-from meats and fish to pastries and candy, grains, produce, clothing, you name it! I am a big photography freak..particulary I like to try to capture locals in everyday events. Kristtii warned me against this though;...

  • Drive slowly!

When you see this sign take your foot off the gas pedal! One or two hundred meters beyond the sign the road ends in a unpaved track. When it is raining the track can be extremely muddy and sometimes it is better to turn back to find a better road. When it is sunny driving cause a lot of dust - close your windows and try to find a car wash after...

Estonia is a safe country so as Tallinn is a safe city, after all, the police are around all the tourist places in the cities. Anyway, at night don't walk alone on the darkness or in the places that you don't know.

  • Pickpockets

Especially during the summer, when there are many tourists in the city, you face the danger of falling victim to pickpockets' gangs working in the Old Town. The usual scheme is the following - a (usually) young man stops you on a crowded street, asking you for directions or time, offering to sell you something etc. and at the same time another guy...

  • Cab drivers

Before stepping foot into a taxi, be sure to agree on a fare first! I was warned about this beforehand, yet thought "yeah sure, it won't happen to me!" A trip from Tallin's airport to the Old Town should cost no more than 50 kr. Let's just say my journey cost about 3 times that! I like to think of the experience not as getting ripped off, but as...

Well...Be certain that you dont take all your money and documents with you while sightseeing. If you are on the road by your own (new) car, park it somewhere where it's guarded. Nothing happened to our car but I've heard some horrible stuff...Again, there might be areas which require a parking fe even though it doesn't say so nearby. In Pärnu by the beach there is a kiosk where to pay the fee, even though you would park as far as half a...

If you use taxi be aware of that price! Takso (name of that tax-company) seems to use 'cheating' in their taxmeters. Usually price in tax-meter is first at '12K' and when I started to tell where I want to go in Finnish on in English - taxidriver push one button in his taxmeter and then it says '35K'.Last time I used ab. 10 times a taxi in Tallinn....

In Tallinna, remember to be careful with your purse, money, passport.....things like that. It takes only a second to loose everything to someone, who just seems to be passing by. NB Car tourists! When visiting Estonia in winter, wash your car (especially its bottom) freqently, because chemically active salt is still used for preventing a slipper way.And DO NOT tank your car in the places you would not trust. There is a risk to get a petrol of very bad quality, local people can tell you about occurences of such kind even on...
