Galicnik Things to Do

  • Horse Riding Adventures

A Riding Expedition is a journey on horseback, which may entail a few hardships but reward you with an experience to remember and scenery which you might otherwise not have the opportunity to see.Holiday on a horseback offers a firsthand experience of the riches of Mavrovo National Park. This particular holiday is a great way to discover the...

  • St Peter and Paul Church, Galicnik

The Church of Sveti Petar and Pavle (St Peter and Paul) is a beautiful and abundantly decorated church in the village Galicnik. It plays a central role in the Galicnik Wedding, which takes place every 12th of July.

  • Check out the view from Hotel Neda

The terrace of hotel Neda offers an exceptionally good view over Galicnik. However, the food we had in the hotel was terrible, so be warned...

  • The crowds were everywhere

When attending the Galicnik Wedding it was difficult to select a location as you couldn't see it all from one spot. We missed a lot of the action, but we were fortunate in that we could see the dancing fairly well.

  • The Original Church Building

Much of it has been restored, but much remains to be done. Donations are very welcome as construction is still under way.My Grandfather was baptised here.

  • The crowds near the wedding church

You can see the stairway to the church. When we walked by we were able to look in, but our group decided to move further down to get a better view of the whole area.

  • Some more of the dancing and music at...

You can see the musicians playing to the audience:) At some distance behind them are the stairs to the church.

  • The married women dance...

I was fortunate to get this close before the police shooed me up to the ampitheatre. You can see the traditional costumes worn for this event.

  • The music & dance!

Be sure to position yourself as best as you can to see the dancers and musicians. The amplification system isn't all that great -- so seeing is very important..The drum is called a 'tapan'.

    Hotel Neda

by Pijlmans Written Dec 12, 2007

Hotel Neda offers great view over the village Galicnik.

We went here to have lunch and a drink on the terrace.

We should have gone for just the view and a drink because the food was terrible and the service lousy (and I don't complain quickly...)

    Favorite Dish: The great view!

Great view over Galicnik from Hotel Neda Hotel Neda

Galicnik Transportation

  • Getting There

There are two ways to get to Galicnik – hiking from Janche or driving from Mavrovo.Hiking doesn’t look bad on the map, and the description I had of the trail sounded ok – about 5 km, moderate – with great views. Once there, though, people who lived there said the description was completely wrong (except for the view), that it was really more like...

  • Up in the mountains...

Getting to Galichnik isn't easy -- you take a road from Mavrovo that winds through the mountains. And then after you park your car, or your bus finds a place it is a long [usually hot] walk [a lot uphill] to get to the wedding site. It's worth it!.The website below is a full report with pictures of the 2002 wedding. I attended the one in July 1999.

  • Rock slides

Watch for rocks in the road. There was quite alot of snow this spring. This is the alpine pass section.

The snow can be quite heavy in the winter, leaving you stranded for weeks. There are a couple of year-round residents there and reliable electricty., however. Only one road leads to Galicnik; it comes by way of Lake Mavrovo ski resort. A number of buildings' roofs have collapsed due to snow load.

Here is a picture taken in May 2005 of the mountain pass leading into Galicnik:
