The largest artificial lake in Macedonia is part of Mavrovo National Park. Due to its elevation (over 1,000 meters, or 3,000 feet), this mountain lake sometimes freezes over in winter.

Lake Ohrid is the largest and most beautiful of Macedonia’s three tectonic lakes. Its astonishingly clean, clear waters together with the serene stillness of its mountain setting have captivated visitors since prehistoric times. The lake is enormous, at some 30 kilometers (18 miles) long and up to 288 meters (945 feet) deep.
About Lake and town Ohrid I created a special site.

Debar’s Lake Spilje is the second-biggest artificial lake in the country, set in the solitude of Macedonia’s western forests. As it is rich with many species of fish, Lake Spilje is visited by passionate fishermen, and also makes for good boating.

Lake Prespa, Lake Dojran, Lake Mladost are another large ones, and often you see smaller beside the roads.

    Out of official description:

The mountains in Macedonia are divided divided in two groups: Rhodope and Dinaric. In the first division, the Rhodope group is considered as older and embraces the larger part of the mountain regions in eastern Macedonia, while the Dinaric group is younger and divided in 3 subgroups: Vardar zone, which includes the mountains on the both sides of the river Vardar, right after the great curve of the river north-west of Skopje. Pelagonia massif, located on the west-southwest of the Vardar zone and eastern of the Shara zone. Shara zone, the highest one in Macedonia, is located in the most western part of the country, and stretches in north-south direction along the borders with Serbia and Montenegro, Albania and Greece."

The highest mountain peaks in Macedonia are all found in Mavrovo National Park, located in the western-central edge of the country. These peaks are topped by the imposing Great Korab Mountain (2,764 meters). Not only do these mountains provide magnificent visual landscapes, they also offer some of the best skiing in the Balkans.

Always I was impressed by the mightiness of mountains. Here in addition I got a great and deep visual impact because of somewhat I am impossible to describe. Sometimes there is something like that. One should simply accept and not everytime ask why. But it was a pity that I could not hike there. The time was simply too short. I had already wanted to do.

Berovo is located in the Maleševo mountains in the eastern part of Macedonia. There is a restaurant and also cabins you can stay in. It is a beautiful area with fishing and hiking among the possible activities.

The meal on the terrace overlooking the lake.
The walk to the dam that created Berovo Lake.

In the eastern part of Macedonia (which by the way isn't explored enough and is very nice), there's a pretty cool town called Strumica. Normally known for its tasty peanuts (and people that talk really fast). :-)
Definitely suggest visiting it as people are warm, friendly and ready for fun.
"Skala" is one of the famous places for going out. And also a cafe called "Zair."

(photo taken from the web-site www.strumica.com)

March is the month of the Strumica CARNIVAL. Street fun, crazyness, creativity expression and... see for yourself.
(just read today that it had 20,000 visitors this year)

Be sure to visit Matka Canyon near Skopje. On a warm day you will find many people swimming, sunning, enjoying a cool drink and visiting the small monastery church, Sv. Andreij.
    .
I have made a separate page for Matka under its own name -- please visit!

Located in the Western part of Macedonia, Mavrovo is a place that has a unique beauty every season of the year. It is the-place for all of those who enjoy skiing and winter sports, in general.
Though the splendor of the fall colors is another can't-afford-to-miss moment.

Sitting on the balcony of my cousin's weekend-house there, "staring" at the Mavrovo Lake, clearing out my head and drinking coffee.
    Nice!

I enjoy the traditional music, both sung and instrumental, as well as the dances. There are several groups that are preserving these traditional materials. During the summer you will often find outdoor performances around the country -- this one was in Skopje on the Vardar promenade near the old stone bridge.

As mentioned, there are a lot of archeological ruins that can be found throughout this little country.
One of the most amazing sites is definitely HREAKLEA, or the ruins of this ancient place - located near Bitola.
Founded by Philip II of Macedonia in 4th c. BC!!!

Be sure to visit Lake Ohrid. The town, its monuments and the lake are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Among the sites to see is the monastery church, Sveti Jovan Kaneo. It was featured in the Macedonian film 'Before the Rain.'

Sharing a glass of rakija with the the woman who is the guide at the church. She remembered me from before -- and now that I can speak a little Macedonian we've become 'rakija friends'!

In Skopje be sure to drive up Vodno mountain to visit the Panteleimon monastery church and to enjoy the views out over Skopje.

In Ohrid be sure to take the short walk to Sveti Jovan Kaneo monastery church.

And then there is Matka Canyon just outside Skopje.

Oh and Sveti Jovan Bigorski ... you get the idea... there are many beautiful places to visit.

Every visit to Skopje has a certain pattern. Escape the airport -- go to our friends' home and eat too much -- THEN drive up Vodno to Panteleimon monastery church.

I've visited Panteleimon in all four seasons, including March 1999 after a brief snow storm. Please visit my Vodno page to see my pictures of Panteleimon.
