BARGALA-archaeological sity
by dusica_stamenik
Bargala was a fortified town constructed between the 4th and 6th century, a period spanning Late Antiquity and Early Byzantium. It is located 20 km northeast of the modern city of Štip, Republic of Macedonia on the lower slopes of the Plachkovica mountain. Archaeological excavations have uncovered a basilica, trade quarters, a water tank, a bath, and a fortification system with an impressive main gate and infrastructure.Gold coins of Emperor Phokas (602-610) has been found at the locality, as well as 6th and 7th century Slavic pottery which bears the most resemblance to pottery connected to the Serbs on the Danube.

Travel Guide for Macedonia
by Pijlmans
Whereas for most countries numerous travel guides exist, for Macedonia they are hard to find. A great help for planning trips and understanding the Macedonian people in general has been The Bradt Travel Guide Macedonia by Thammy Evans (2004) to me. I can recommend it to everybody interested in Macedonia! Even the locals might learn something they didn´t know!Meanwhile, there is a second edition (2007). Make sure you get the right one!The second edition includes some descriptions of hikes. However, some of the descriptions of the hikes I have tried to walk were not very clear, and I was unable to finish the hike because of that. Be warned!2009: There is a 3rd edition as well now, but I did not read it...

Sun Tan
by alectrevor
Ladies have their handbags, but men only have pockets, so my tip for men and sun burn protection is the tiny tube of Sol**n or other. I mention this because when i was in Skopje in September it was hot and sunny., and the tube just fitted into my shirt pocket.
Don't hurry the holiday
by ELear
Macedonia is on the way between many places - Serbia and Greece, Albania and Bulgaria, and so on - which makes it convenient to stop off there for two or three days when travelling from, say, Greece to Romania. I've done that myself, but although I enjoyed myself I think it was a mistake. Macedonia deserves much more than two or three days, and it has so much to offer (nature, history, culture, gastronomy.....) that I think it would be better treated as your main destination, possibly with a sidetrip for a day or two into Bulgaria, Albania or wherever.
I most liked the open, friendly, humorous, honest, self-confident people.

Bitola
by Malecka
Bitola is said to be the Town of the Consuls. It has a long and rich history. The town was situated on the well known Roman road Via Ignatia which connected the towns on the Adriatic Coast with those on the Aegean Sea. Having a favorable geographical position enabled Bitola to be a significant economic, administrative, diplomatic and cultural center. It could be said that in the second half of the 19th century, Bitola was one of the biggest centers in the Balkans.

Ohrid
by Malecka
Ok, Ohrid deserves the number one place, because of... when you visit it, you'll see why! :-) It is a town of old churches, of nice restaurants offering traditional dishes, some outstanding sights.Of the numerous monuments in this town, some deserve 'special' attention...Church of St Sofia (11th century), the church of St John Kaneo (13th century), The Tsar Samuil Fortress, the house of the Robevci family (probably the best example of old Macedonian architecture), Plaoshnik, the monastery of St Naum (10th century)...It is a very picturesque town, especially alive during the summer. The Ohrid lake Riviera is also lovely. Aside from the typical hotels and resorts, there are nice little villages that deserve a visit. For instance, Trpejca... wonderful place!
Take a look at the photo... the KANEO-SUNSET!The view that spreads from Plaoshnik...Coffee at the famous bar Aquarius...
