The Mountains

by elgin99

Out of official description:The mountains in Macedonia are divided divided in two groups: Rhodope and Dinaric. In the first division, the Rhodope group is considered as older and embraces the larger part of the mountain regions in eastern Macedonia, while the Dinaric group is younger and divided in 3 subgroups: Vardar zone, which includes the mountains on the both sides of the river Vardar, right after the great curve of the river north-west of Skopje. Pelagonia massif, located on the west-southwest of the Vardar zone and eastern of the Shara zone. Shara zone, the highest one in Macedonia, is located in the most western part of the country, and stretches in north-south direction along the borders with Serbia and Montenegro, Albania and Greece."The highest mountain peaks in Macedonia are all found in Mavrovo National Park, located in the western-central edge of the country. The Lakes

by elgin99

The largest artificial lake in Macedonia is part of Mavrovo National Park. Due to its elevation (over 1,000 meters, or 3,000 feet), this mountain lake sometimes freezes over in winter.Lake Ohrid is the largest and most beautiful of Macedonia’s three tectonic lakes. Its astonishingly clean, clear waters together with the serene stillness of its mountain setting have captivated visitors since prehistoric times. The lake is enormous, at some 30 kilometers (18 miles) long and up to 288 meters (945 feet) deep.About Lake and town Ohrid I created a special site.Debar’s Lake Spilje is the second-biggest artificial lake in the country, set in the solitude of Macedonia’s western forests. As it is rich with many species of fish, Lake Spilje is visited by passionate fishermen, and also makes for good boating.Lake Prespa, Lake Dojran, Lake Mladost are another large ones, and often you see smaller...

Try Ajvar

by Pijlmans

Ajvar is a relish made principally from red bell peppers, with eggplant, garlic and chile pepper. It is predominantly popular in the Balkans. Depending on capsaicin content in bell peppers and the amount of added chili peppers, it can be sweet, piquant (the most common), or very hot.Ajvar can be consumed as a bread spread, an addition in sandwiches, a condiment (often used with grilled or roasted meat), or a salad (source: Wikipedia).Ajvar can be bought in the supermarket, but home-made Ajvar is the best! It also makes a good souvenir if you´re out of other ideas... I like it hot btw!

by Pijlmans

Mastika is an anise-flavored liqueur containing ± 45% alcohol, considered the 'national drink' of the Republic of Macedonia.Mastika is great! Try it, it should be cold, keep it in the fridge or freezer! Drink pure or with some ice...If you think 45% alcohol is too strong for you (...) try the local beer Skopsko!
