This monastery church is located in western Macedonia. The "main event", other than the stunning location, is a carved iconostasis. No pictures are allowed inside so .. here is one of just outside the church. Attending the sung evening prayer in this church TWICE!!!

Galicnik... ah, this place simply fascinates me. It is a small village, in the Western part of the country, close to Mavrovo. Actually, as soon as you start driving from Mavrovo to Galicnik, the views spreaded in front of you are 'UNREAL'! MOST DEFINITELY: THE GALICHNIK wedding!!! Every year, in July, a very unique event that is "a must" for anybody visiting Macedonia.It is a traditional wedding, with all the Macedonian customs, the clothing, the songs... everything! So, in case you have a chance - do see it...
As mentioned, there are a lot of archeological ruins that can be found throughout this little country.One of the most amazing sites is definitely HREAKLEA, or the ruins of this ancient place - located near Bitola. Founded by Philip II of Macedonia in 4th c. BC!!!
Take a look in Skopje, Macedonia looks like a nice country and all people (except 2) were amazingly friendly! It's not a pleasant one, but as my foundest memory I refer to the 'Fort Kale incident' (see my travelogue in the Skopje chapter)
You must see Ohrid, city protected by UNESKO. It is the city where almost all macedonian people go to holiday, if they wish to stay in the country and not spending to much money. It is tourist center but also and cultural center of Macedonia. I miss everything, but most of it AJVAR. This is macedonian recepy with paprika and tomatoes.
You must see Ohrid lake and town Ohrid. That is absolutely one of the beautifull places where I ever have been. Ohrid is place where you can see centuries on every street. You have to visit antique shop in center of the town, monasteries from medieval period around lake and city museum. Also on the lake coast you can find a very good caffes and restaurants. Smell of pine threes around Ohrid lake, and lake view early in the morrning.

For a long time it was the cathedral church ('Great Church') of the Ohrid Archiepiscopate whose ecclesiastical authority covered the territories up to the river Danube to the north, the Albanian coast to the west, and the Bay of Thessalonica to the east. The church was probably used as a cathedral way back in the past, in the period of the Czar Samuel who, in the late X century, moved his throne from Prespa to Ohrid. The other assumption is that there used to be another church on the same site during the reign of the Macedonian Czar Samuel, and that later on this church was ruined for unknown reasons. The city of Ohrid is very beautiful, especially the old section of town with its narrow winding streets. the thing I miss the most about macedonia is the scenery, history, and people. I love the mountain andwater views of Lake Ohrid at sunset. Struga is a very nice city by the lake. it has a great beach by the hotel Drin. Also a walk along the river is nice.
