I have met a charming country, have met quite many nice people who often lead a poor life. They are kind and sociable, hospitality is written with a capital letter. You should never decline an invitation. This is offending. Who does have arrogance or loves only the splendour are out of the place there.

There are much beauty and natural in Macedonien, but also poverty and dirt, scrap, trash. The people have much zest for life despite everything and like to laugh.
I take for granted, that one has to observe "rules" also as a guest. However, unfortunately, some seem to have forgotten this.

Still a word to the Gypsies. You meet everywhere and just have their quarters on the edge of the towns. They beg everywhere. Her life is even more today than tomorrow. Often I was frightened because of the children, often lean and dirty. One does not get rid of them any more if one gives. They are run away rigorously everywhere. They are often annoying but a categorical 'No' usually suffices. I did no photos of them, it was for certain that way better to refrain.

The currency of the country is Denar.
At the moment is 1 Euro = 60 Denar
Travels, shops, meals, food, except for high-quality technical goods everything is very cheaply.
I never got coins into my hand, only paper money.

  • Facts: Macedonia was the first foreign province of the Roman Empire in AD 146. When the Roman Empire split in the 4th century, these early Macedonians fell under the Byzantine thumb. Serbian control began 1331, ended with the 1389 Battle of Kosovo. In the next five centuries the territory was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire. The International Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO) was created in 1893 under the leadership of Goce Delchev, with the slogan:"Macedonia for Macedonians".....

    Toilets

Surely you understand why no photo exists about toilets here. *smile But it is one of the most important things: the toilets.
Most restaurants, almost all residential buildings, hotels and accommodations have into normal toilets. But the old toilets you find often still away in small restaurants and cafés (also Skopje). Placed flat basins are meant with that, with a hole on flat ground. One must go into the squatting position like in free nature. A flush exists. Stability is necessary. *lol
But one also can quietly disappear and simply miss and look into another one out of the small restaurant whether it is better there. Without being guest in it. If one has bad luck, then there you have to climb under the roof, but on a chicken ladder...like me in Skopje. *rotfl

Macedonian music styles developed under the strong influence of Byzantine church music.
Under Ottoman rule, professional music activity ceased to be practiced and only folk songs remained. Macedonians created their own musical wealth, expressing their sufferings and joys, distresses and beliefs. The folk song remained the only music activity in Macedonia until the 19th century.
At the end of the 19th century, the first choirs and orchestras using notation signs began to appear in Macedonia. These gradually replaced the Turkish calgii, small bands using folk instruments, who played without notation and had introduced oriental elements to the Macedonian music.
(From Macedonia Yesterday and Today by Jovan Pavlovski & Misel Pavlovski)

The folk music of Macedonia is very diverse in terms of melodic forms, but also it boasts a considerable variety of keys and it is especially rich rhythmically. The most interesting feature, in that respect, are certainly the so called uneven rhyhtms. The complex rhythm of a song or an instrumental piece is framed usually by a tapan or tarambuka.

    Music Example:

    Izvoren Ensemble

In the autumn many families are starting to conserve fruits and vegetables for the winter. The favourite dish prepared is Ajvar, with a main ingredient a gorgeous big red pepper grown in Strumica region. For the curious ones, I can supply a recipe :-)

    Holidays

Not all holidays in Macedonia are similar to the western holidays. For instance, the Orthodox Christmas is celebrated January 7 and 8! Also Orthodox Easter is celebrated on different days than the Catholic Easter. Keep this in mind when you plan your holiday around these days!

A short overview of special Macedonian holidays:

    Januari:
    1st - New Years Day
    7th+8th - Christmas
13th+14th - Big carnival in Vevcani

    August:
    - Festival month in Ohrid, Bitola, Strumica and Krucevo
2nd - Ilinden Uprising (Memorial say of the 1903 uprising against the Ottoman empire, especially celebrated in Krucevo ).
8th and 9th - Festival in Gorna Belica.

    September
8th - Independence Day (dating from Septemer 8th 1991). The weekend closest to Independence Day, it is possible to climb Mount Korab in Mavrovo National Park. Normally, it is forbidden to climb this mountain due to its proximity to the border with Albania.

Pastrmajlija is an oval pizza with copped meat on top of it. Traditional Macedonian food!

Especially the town Stip is famous for its pastrmajlija.

In restaurant Cardak in Stip they can also make you a good vegetarian version with mushrooms. Tel: +389(0)32397900.

  • Very similarly to what I wrote on this place on my Croatia-page, young people are expected to offer their seats to elderly people (and pregnant etc.) in the buses.
When you go out with people for the first time, they often insist on inviting you. Just make up for it by paying the bill the next time. It's not common to have everybody paying their own bill down to the last penny...
Tips are not very common (not if you only had 2 drinks at least), but come on, a small tip doesn't hurt anyone!

Concerning religious practice, you might notice people on the streets making the cross with their hands. Orthodox Christians are supposed to do that whenever they see a church. It's also common to light a candle whenever you enter a church.
When entering a mosque you have to put off your shoes!
