Coffee = hospitality

by ketrinche

You will, most likely, be invited to countless strangers' houses when you go to Ohrid, and you have to get used to drinking the thick turkish coffee repeatedly throughout the day! If someone invites to over to their house for coffee, or to a cafe for coffee, this is an extension of their hospitality and their pride in showing you their homeland. So careful when you decline their offer, you might end up being the subject of controversy in Ohrid (which is a very small town once you get to know it, everyone knows everything and there are no secrets!).

Delishious Ajvar

by kaliopA

In the autumn many families are starting to conserve fruits and vegetables for the winter. The favourite dish prepared is Ajvar, with a main ingredient a gorgeous big red pepper grown in Strumica region. For the curious ones, I can supply a recipe :-)

Miscellaneous cultural info

by Natrix

Very similarly to what I wrote on this place on my Croatia-page, young people are expected to offer their seats to elderly people (and pregnant etc.) in the buses. When you go out with people for the first time, they often insist on inviting you. Just make up for it by paying the bill the next time. It's not common to have everybody paying their own bill down to the last penny...Tips are not very common (not if you only had 2 drinks at least), but come on, a small tip doesn't hurt anyone! Concerning religious practice, you might notice people on the streets making the cross with their hands. Orthodox Christians are supposed to do that whenever they see a church. It's also common to light a candle whenever you enter a church. When entering a mosque you have to put off your shoes!

About Macedonians

by Karolina01

Facts: Macedonia was the first foreign province of the Roman Empire in AD 146. When the Roman Empire split in the 4th century, these early Macedonians fell under the Byzantine thumb. Serbian control began 1331, ended with the 1389 Battle of Kosovo. In the next five centuries the territory was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire. The International Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO) was created in 1893 under the leadership of Goce Delchev, with the slogan:"Macedonia for Macedonians".....For more read the book: "Let's Go: Eastern Europe 2004" page 476

The Macedonian language ...

by shrimp56

... is a South-Slavic language that uses a Cyrillic alphabet. Please click on the picture for a better view..While Macedonians also use the Roman alphabet, particularly on highway signs, it is a good idea to get the hang of the cyrillic alphabet before you go:)

The 1999 Presidential elections

by shrimp56

I was in Macedonia during the first round of the October 1999 presidential elections. It was interesting to watch the candidates try a western-style debate. The winner was Boris Trajkovski. This is one of his posters from that election that I saw in Skopje. His slogan was "I believe in Macedonia"!

Anyone who visits Macedonia...

by Backo

Anyone who visits Macedonia should go to the numerous beautiful and very old churches. Also, the unique macedonian folk music and dance. Reccomend visiting ruins of the ancient cities and ancient fortresses in different towns dating from way back in the past. There is a lot of history to see in this country.

SKOPJE: if you are in Skopje...

by macedonia

SKOPJE: if you are in Skopje during the summer, in June and July the Skopje Summer Festival takes place at several locations throughout the city. I will never forget the nights spent watching plays and concerts at the open-air stage at the Skopje Kale fortress - it simply is magical, the stars above, the lights of Skopje below and a good play or concert held in front of you. Other locations where events from this festival take place are the City Park, the Kapa An, Saint Panteleimon Church etc. For more info check www.unet.com.mk/skopskoleto/== If you are in Skopje in October, then most definitelly you should not miss one of the world's best Jazz Festivals. At the Skopje Jazz Fest, amongst many others, it were Tito Puente, Ray Charles, BB King, Paco de Lucia, Youssou n'Dour, Al Di Meola that so far performed.
