Mavrovo National Park

by Pijlmans

Mavrovo was proclaimed National Park in 1949 and is the biggest National Park of Macedonia, located in the north-west and bordering Albania. It covers an area of more than 73,000 square hectares. The structure of the park is diverse, covering a part of the alpine mountainous region from the Shara Mountain and Pind Mountainous system. This area includes the most southern slopes of Shara Mountain and the mountains Korab, Deshat, Krchin and the mountain Bistra. Characteristic for this rather small area are the large number of mountain tops and peaks higher than 2000m, 52 exactly, that are divided by deep gorges and canyons. The highest peak is Gorem Korab, with its 2764m also the highest peak of Macedonia. The vegetation falls under the Mediterranean, Euro-Siberian and Alpine-Norwegian regions. Over 100 species of higher plants can be found here, out of which 38 tree species, 35 bushes and...

Fortress Towers of Marko (Markovi Kuli, Prilep)

by Pijlmans

High above the town of Prilep stand the Markovi Kuli, Towers of Marko, named after the last Macedonian king Marko. Marko Mrnjavcevic, son of Tsar Volkasin Mrnjavcevic, was of Serbian origin. When his father died in 1371 in a fight against the Ottomans, the crown was passed to Marko. Prilep, which was the capital of Marko's empire, eventually fell to the Ottomans in 1394. A year later King Marko was killed while he was forced to fight for the Ottomans.Parts of the fortress should date back to the Iron Age, 3rd and 4th centuries BC and later periods during the Ottoman Empire. Most of the ruins that can be seen today are from medieval times. We took a cab from the center of Prilep to take us up the hill until underneath the Markovi Kuli. This place is marked by a huge rock that has the shape of an elephant (see the pictures). We walked up the hill over the road leading to the fortress. This...

3-4 day trip Ohrid-Prilep-Krusevo-Ohrid

by Pijlmans

We did a very nice 3-day trip, starting from Ohrid, where we had our accommodation. To visit Ohrid and surroundings you at least need 2 or 3 days, see my Ohrid page. The trip contains two hikes and numerous places of interest. From the bus station in Ohrid, we took the bus to Prilep. We stayed two days in Prilep, in the up-market hotel Crystal Palace. The first day we visited the Towers of Marko Fortress, the Monastery of St Michael the Archangel and the town of Prilep. The second day, we hiked from Prilep to the Monastery of Treskovec, 8-10 km in the mountains outside of Prilep. You could decide to stay an extra night in the Monastery of Treskovec, but we walked back the same day.Back in Prilep, we took a taxi to the Monastery of St Spas in Trstenik, where we stayed the night. The next morning, we followed the trail from the Monastery of St Spas to Krusevo. In Krusevo, there were...

Hike from monastery of St Spas to Krusevo

by Pijlmans

After our visit to Prilep (this is part of a 3-4 day trip from Ohrid-Prilep-Krusevo-Ohrid) we took a cab to the monastery of St Spas in Trstenik, on the road from Prilep to Krusevo. The road to the monastery is down in the valley before the road starts climbing up to Krusevo. We arrived there in the evening and got a room in the new part of the monastery. After breakfast the next day (take your own food) and visiting the church on the site, we hiked from the back of the monastery to Krusevo, together with a friendly old man and his horse. The way is not marked, but more or less obvious. Nevertheless, try to get some directions in the monastery. The link below describes the 3-day trip we made, including this hike.

Hiking on Mount Baba in Pelister National Park

by Pijlmans

In Bitola, we took a cab which took us to a dead-end road close to a hotel at the foot of Baba mountain (Baba means grandmother). From there we did a short hike through the forest to the mountain hut Kopanki, where we cooked our dinner (soup + pasta, it´s hard to make something else on the rudimentary cooking-range in the little kitchen next to the mountain hut. But very adventurous!)You have to bring your own food! It is also a good idea to bring some beer or rakija, to catalyze contact with the other guests :-)Kopanki mountain hut (110 beds) 1600m Mount Baba. Tel (not verified) 047 222 384, 5-10 euro / night. The next day, we hiked to the other mountain hut, Golemo Ezero (meaning big lake), next to, yes, the big lake. This is a hike of about 8-10 hours, so be well prepared and take sufficient food and water. We got directions from the owner of the Kopanki mountain hut, and from the very...

Lake Ohrid

by CliffClaven

The best known tourist destination in Macedonia is Lake Ohrid. Old Cliffie has to confess that he hasn't been there on his recent visits to Macedonia. In fact, it must be 35 years since he spent some time in Ohrid, when it was still part of the old Yugoslavia. He wandered along the lakeside until he reached the dire warnings about approaching the Albanian border and then sat at an outdoor restaurant in the evening sun to enjoy the local grilled meats and local salad.

Climbing Mount Korab, highest peak of Macedonia

by Pijlmans

Mount Korab (2764 m) is the highest peak of Macedonia, located in the Mavrovo National Park in the northwest of Macedonia.Since Mount Korab is on the border with Albania, it is not allowed to climb this mountain without authorization from the Macedonian government, which allegedly is hard to get. However, once a year the Mountain Club Korab arranges the annual climb during the weekend closest to Independence Day, September 8. It is a big event that attracts hundreds of mountaineers, escorted by the border police. For contact, see the website of the Korab Mountain Club, which is also available in English.

Sharkova Dupka Cave, Mavrovo

by Pijlmans

The cave Sharkova Dupka is located in the National Park Mavrovo at 280 degrees west from the Mavrovo Lake in Mavrovo. The cave slit (entrance hole) is at the same height as the hotel Bistra roof on the hill just opposite it.The cave as a well-like entrance with diameter of 2 m, goes down 2 m straight, then 6 m oblique under an angle of 20 degrees, continuing in a 6 m vertical up to the grand hall that is 10 m high, 22 m long and 12 m wide.Big stalactites and stalagmites with draperies of corals can be found left in the hall. There is a big 5 m long stalactite on the right. The hall continues in two canals - on both left and right side, also rich with decorative elements. The second hall is down the channels. It is 15 m long, 13 m wide and 11 m high, rich with decorations, undamaged and untouched by the human hand. Periodically, underground water flows down.Besides the numerous underground...

Go hiking

by kaliopA

Once you are in Klinka Palinka, take a walk not a taxi and go throught the beautiful forest surrounding the monastery St.Joakim Osogovski. This is especially recommended through the winter time and beware of some bears that returned to this region recently. Very exciting though.
