Mosques

by elgin99

Again a strange pictures for my "differently exercised" eyes : Mosques, so many mosques. High mountains, little villages...and a mosque in front of the massif. There are many of them in Skopje or in Ohridand and elsewhere with a big historical background. About that on these pages.

The Villages and Roads

by elgin99

Again and again the villages in the mountains were impressive for me. Quite particularly the position, high above in the mountains. As like as a coloured blot in the green landscape. The powerful mountain massifs and the little houses at the slopes are a charming contrast. The roads not less impressive. Sometimes I was glad that I could look by the lens of the camera and Mirjana drove. A quick look to the front on the road can already frighten the unpractised mountain driver.

Look beside and byroad

by elgin99

You should have a look into the byroads, have an eye for the sometimes excitingly unique little things on the fringes. The impression of the actual life often offers itself first away from the shopping streets or the sights in Macedonia. Whether it is an old house, a well-tended court or garden, the beauty of the disintegration, flowers or just the people in this country. The little things make unique.

Hiking on Jakupica Mountain

by Pijlmans

This was the first hike we did in Macedonia, and pretty much our first hike ever. So we were totally unprepared :-)We took the train from Skopje to Bogomila. In fact we stopped somewhere in the middle of nowhere, were there was no trainstation. We hooked up with two guys that also got out there and that had done the hike to mountain hut Ceples before, so we didn´t have to worry about finding our way. If you want to do this hike by yourself, I suggest you try to get some more information from the owner of the Mountain hut Ceples and/or check out this very good site: http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/153051/solunska-glava.htmlSince the mountain hut was fully booked, we had to sleep outside in a big military tent with quite some other people. However, we had beds and all was OK. The next day we met some people that were hiking to the Solunska Glava peak at 2540m as well, so we went...

Sveti Naum is an old, peaceful monastery on the shores of Lake Ohrid close to the Albanian border. From the outer walls of the monastery there are fantastic views over the lake.Below Sveti Naum there's an idyllic lagoon with a restaurant that offers tasty trout dishes. The monastery is ca. 25 km south of Ohrid Town via a scenic road along the lakeshore.

The Galicnik Wedding takes...

by shrimp56

The Galicnik Wedding takes place in late May each year. It is a REAL wedding of two young people chosen from those who have applied. The wedding is traditional Macedonian one that preserves various historical rituals and includes the performance of traditional Macedonia music and dance. The most famous dance is 'Teshkoto' [The difficult one'] The town is high in the mountains and not easy to reach, but the trip is worth it! [The best road leads in from Mavrovo, but the town is actually closer to Sveti Jovan Bigorski] The picture is of 'teshkoto'

Famous for the so-called "kachamak" or "bak'rdanik" (made out of corn-meal), the delicious "kiselo mleko" (thicker than buttermilk, but not the typical sour-cream) and the white cheese.Just make a stop, give yourself a treat and then you can continue either toward the monastery St Jovan Bigorski, or Mavrovo...

by Backo

There are some beautiful canyons and caves, too. You will like the town of Ohrid at the Ohrid lake (Lihnida is the old name of the town it had in the Roman times). And the old tzar Samuil's fortress on the hill right next to the lake, as well as the small churches near the lake and on the hills around it. Go to Bitola - was known as the City of the consules. Houses in Bitola are built in a unique architectal style. It is an old and a beautiful town. See the ruins of the ancient town Heraklea (the old name of Bitola). Situated in the foothills of the mountain Pelister. The serenity and the tranquility of the mountain Pelister will enchant you for sure. The mountain Pelister near Bitola has a wood of pines Molika, which is the unique pine tree that grows only on that mountain. Pelister eyes (the two small lakes on the top of the mountain) are amazing.
