Skovin Vinarnitsa (Wineshop): My Sorta Shop #2

Skovin is one of Macedonia's major wine producers whose vineyards are located around Skopje, at the top end of the Vardar Wine Region. I can't attest to the quality of the white or rose offerings but the reds I've tried, their Vranec and the Markov Monastir, certainly suited both my palate and my pocket (always a winning combo).

You'll find their wines stocked in many restaurants and supermarkets and they also have specialist wine shops in most Macedonian cities and larger towns.

Here in Bitola the shop is located towards the bottom end of the main street and is open weekeday from 9 until 9, until 10 on Saturdays and until 1 pm on Sundays.

Tobacco Together: My Sorta Shop #1

I never had the necessity to use this shop but It was good to see that it exists and with its Shirok Sokak location and bright frontage would have been easy to find had I required its services.

As the name subtly suggests this is one of the city's 24 hour convenience stores and as well as tobacco products also stocks other useful items such as snacky stuff and drinks, newspapers and magazines, mobile phone top-ups and even lottery tickets. Also onsite is a 24 hour Bankomat (ATM).

Bitola is an excellent place for shopping, with so many outdoor and indoor markets as well as shops, you are really spoiled for choice. There are lots of shops selling local souvenirs and craftwork and for anybody with room in their luggage to bring home gifts, these offer lots of variety. I chose the Bazaar for shopping and bought various things I needed like fruit and food and then I spotted a scarf I just had to have. I love scarves and this one is multicoloured, very ethnic looking and the fabric has a crushed appearance that I really like. This scarf cost 400MKD which is around EUR6.50 and I would have paid around three times this price at home. In the Bezisten, I bought a notebook and some other things that I needed and outside on the street a Burek, for lunch

I also bought sunscreen, hand cream and body lotion in the chemist just before Magnolia Square. Final shopping call was the supermarket at Sirok Sokak: water, some small food items and a little splurge of luxury with a box of Turkish Delight.

Everything I bought was very cheap compared with prices in Ireland but the real joy in shoppiing here was trawling through the Bazaar and the other markets. I loved shopping in Bitola .

What to buy: Local produce and colourful fabric items.

What to pay: Much less then in northern Europe.

Previously divided by their respective craftsman association, the Old Bazaar is a labyrinth of small shops selling pretty much everything from shoes, music, household items to a farmers market with a colorful display of fruits and vegetables.
