Crkvata Sveta Bogorodica Zaumska – the Church of the Holy Mother of God at Zaum is the beautiful, richly decorated edifice. It is located approximately 20 km from the city of Ohrid, at the stunning location, on a small secluded beach squeezed between almost vertical rocks of Mount Galicica on the east, and water of the Ohrid Lake on the west. It is accessible only from the lake side, by boat.
The Church of the Holy Mother of God at Zaum is the endowment of Grgur Brankovic aka Kesar Grgur. Grgur, an almost forgotten figure, was the elder brother of Vuk Brankovic, the most powerful Serbian nobleman in the last decade of the 14th century.
An inscription in the Church of the Holy Mother of God at Zaum indicates that it was erected and the fresco painted in 1361. In its original appearance the church had a parvis of which the remains can be easily spotted. The frescoes were commissioned by Archbishop Gregory of Devol, one of the most influential figures of the Archbishopric of Ohrid in the mid 14th century. Although highly damaged and demolished by the persons who scratched their names, the frescoes in the Church of the Holy Mother of God at Zaum, artwork of an unknown master probably educated in Thessaloniki, are among the peaks of the 14th century fresco painting in Macedonia. The most interesting and intriguing fresco in the church is the depiction of a very rare theme – Saint Anna breastfeeding Virgin Mary, painted on the north wall.
The easiest way to reach the Church of the Holy Mother of God at Zaum is take a boat ride from the village of Trpejca. The entrance to the church is free, but a symbolic donation is matter of good manners.
