Getting to Ohrid from Canada, was no easy matter, but when VT Friends of ours mentioned that we could fly to Ohrid directly from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, we booked it. Corendon Vacations, offered flight on CORENDON AIRLINES directly to Ohrid's St. Paul the Apostle Airport, shuttle bus to and from the airport, 11 nights at the Diplomat Hotel and breakfast daily for 586,50 Euros for the two of us. The plane carried almost 180 passengers and the flight took about 2 1/2 hours. Very pleasant and enjoyable flight.

This year (2010) I landed for the first time on Ohrid Airport with a direct flight from Amsterdam.
What a great view of Lake Ohrid before landing!
In the summer, there is a little bar with a terrace outside where you can have a drink (e.g. your last Skopsko beer!). The picture is taken from the terrace...

While small, Ohrid's airport is the countries second international airport. Compared to other ways of getting to the lake, it presents the most convenient opportunities. Unfortunately it's only served by a small number of airlines, with only a few destinations. Probably the most major airline serving the town is Slovenia's national airline, Adria, which flies to its capital, Ljubljana. Switzerland's budget carrier, Helvetic Airways, flies somewhat expensive trips to Zurich.
Macedonia's flag carrier, MAT Airlines, has flights to Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Vienna, Tel Aviv and Zurich. The other local Balkans carrier is JAT airlines, which ferries in Serbian tourists from Belgrade.

If you come to Ohrid from Skopje by bus, check if you'll board the one that travels via Kicevo and Debar and not via Bitola, cause the last one will take more time to arrive.

The best way to get to Ohrid from Skopje is by bus. Be careful though as there are two routes -- the direct one via Tetovo and the longer one via Resen.

On the boardwalk of Ohrid you will find a line of boat taxis waiting to give someone a ride. I would reccomend you try taking one of these just to have the experience of seeing the crystal clear waters of the deepest and oldest lake in Europe. There is also a monastary that can only be reached by boat. If you driver is willing to take you, you should ask him about 'Sveti Zoran.' If you want to get to the other side of the lake (Sveti Naum, not Albania) I would reccomend taking a larger boat sort of like a ferry. There is one called the 'Christina' that a friend of mine owns, but I don't know if he still has it.

Since there is no train station buses are the way to get to Ochrid. The easiest way is to get one from Skopje (5-6ý, hourly) , although there are also direct buses from Beograd (20ý, 1/day) and Sofia (15ý, 1/day). The Ochrid based bus company is called 'Galeb' which is waaay better than Skopje based 'Proleter'. My Proleter bus from Skopje to Ochrid broke down, and in general there is more leg space. Don't expect too much, however
