    Restaurant Ostrovo: Island Dining

Restaurant Ostrovo - острово in Cyrillic - means "Island Restaurant". It is located in Sveti Naum, just a few kilometers from Ohrid and a place you'll probably visit while you're there. It is actually located on an island near crystal-clear springs, and boat tours of the nearby waterways set off from right beside your table. Cross over the wooden bridge and prepare for a lovely meal!

I stopped by for lunch one afternoon and was almost overwhelmed by the friendliness of the staff. They seated me immediately and offered a number of suggestions for dishes from their menu that would suit a vegetarian diet. Although it was hot I was tired of eating cheesy salads and opted for the "vegetable pan". A short while later I was served a piping-hot casserole dish of diced vegetables in creamy, cheesy sauce. Yum!

You're welcome to eat inside their restaurant if you'd like to escape the sun, but I recommend sitting by the water and enjoying the view. You might even see a frog or two hop by! This would be a lovely place for a large group or special event (call first!).

Ostrovo: Ideal For A Day/Evening Out Of The City

This is another place we visited as part of Euromeet 2011 when we had a lazy day touring by bus from Bitola to Ohrid.

This is a spectacularly sited eatery occupying its own island on a mini lake at the source of the Black Drim River, just down the road from the St Naum monastery. For our pre-arranged dinner we had exclusive use of the whole of the patio on the decking which jutted out into the water, reminescent of the recently-visited pile dwelling at the Bay of the Bones.

Obviously as a group we created our own buzz but nevertheless I was impressed with this restaurant - proper simple cooking, good service, an atmospheric location and little hints of elegance all added up to make for an excellent finale to our day.

Favorite Dish: The meal commenced with Macedonian salad, freshly baked bread, a platter of relishes, dips and condiments and a more than welcoming glass of Rakija.

This was followed by the National dish of Tavche Gravche - which is basically "baked beans" but certainly not that of the same ilk as those of Heinz. This was a substantial pot of subtly-spiced oven-baked white beans in a red pepper sauce topped with an equally substantial hunk of meaty sausage. Fortunately we still had some bread and our waiter was on hand for the beer order as sausage without bread and beer is kinda anathemic to me.

I think there was also a layered chocolate and nut torte to finish but our end of the table settled for another round of beers.

Ostrovo, St. Naum.: Out of the way but worth it.

We visited this excellent establishment as part of the Euromeet 2011 having visited the nearby Monastery of St. Naum, a much revered man in these parts. Actually, it is about 14 miles outside Ohrid but there is no entry for the tiny hamlet of St. Naum in the VT database. Unfortunately, the weather was pretty foul and dusk was falling which somewhat spoiled what look like delightful views over the springs of the Black Drim, the waters of which actually lap the terrace.

The friendly staff greeted us warmly and we were seated in a fairly rustic space with artisan stye wooden tables and benches, very pleasant. The organiser, Valentina, had promised us a very traditional Macedonian meal and it was delivered in spades.

After a very traditional mixed salad, obviously made with excellent ingredients, it was on to the main course which I believe is known as Tavce Gravce looslely meaning sausage and baked beans. This, however, is nothing like you would get in a greasy spoon cafe in Britain, it was absolutely delgihtful with the sausage apparently homemade. It reminded my a bit of Cypriot pastourma in flavour and the beans a perfect and filling accompaniment. This was proper peasant food the way it should be.

Unfortunately, I can give no idea as to price as it was all organised for us.

    Highly recommended.

Favorite Dish: The Tavce Gravce as described.

Ostrovo Sveti Naum: Beautiful and Tranquil Scenery

It is located 30 km from Ohrid, near the monastery St. Naum. It offers 100 indoor and 450 outdoor seats. The restaurant is opened from April to October. The food here isn't as good as the food in town, but the scenery is beautiful. Try getting seats near the water so you can throw bread to the swans as they pass by.

While your here you might want to check out the monastary on a hill nearby which is guarded by peacocks.

Favorite Dish: This is the best place in Ohrid for nice family lunch. Try "Gjomleze" in this restourant, that is Macedonian speciality
