    Ohrid Things to Do

This new Catholic Church dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius is a bit outside the old center of Ohrid. Most churches in Macedonia are Orthodox churches, so this Catholic church is an exception. Sunday mass is at 11.00 h, on working days at 18.30 h. The Church of St Nikola is also nearby.

    Ohrid Things to Do

Tsar Samuli's fortress dates from the 10th century, but several findings shows that the area has been inhabited and used as a stronghold much earlier. The tomb from the 5th century BOT found inside the walls prove that. (See my tip on the National Museum for a bit more info.) The inside of the fortress doesn't have very much to show a visitor tod

    Ohrid Things to Do

It's a deep and ancient lake, perhaps as old as five million years. Few lakes are as old as that. It's the deepest in the Balkans, and if you placed the Eiffel Tower at its deepest point, once the world's tallest structure, its tallest point would just poke out above the water. The lake is so big, deep and isolated that it has its own weather...

Continuing from Sv. Pantelejmon towards the lake you will find the church of Sv. Jovan at the very tip protruding out from land. Sv. Jovan, or St. John, is John the Theologian. It was built around 1280. There is a frescoe inside depicting Sv. Erasmus, Sv. Clement and the archbishop Constantine Kavacila. What is a bit strange is that the

The church of Sv. Sofia was built in the beginning of the 11th century. It was built on top of the remains of a former basilica. During the Ottoman Empire it was used as a mosque and later on as a warehouse until it was once again used as a church from 1912. It has wonderful frescoes from the 11th, 12th and 14th centuries but during the Ottoman...

    Ohrid Things to Do

The old part of Ohrid is a wonderful experience. The whole area, including the lake, is a World Heritage Site protected by UNESCO. Just wandering around the old cobbled streets as they wind up and down the hillside along the lake shore. There are some great old buildings dotted about, and you'll catch great views of the lake poking through the gaps...

    Ohrid Things to Do

Build around 200 BC, just over 2000 years old. In use again during the summer for outdoor concerts and performances. Take a close look at the seats to see if you can read who owned the seat 2000 years ago! The antique theatre first was in use as a theatre in which tragedies, comedies and other plays were performed. During Roman times, the theater...

With bright, recently-restored frescoes inside, and hidden in the trees just outside Sveti Naum Monastery, Sveti Petka is a cute little church worth visiting while you're in the area. Interesting, Sveti Petka is another name for Saint Parascheva of the Balkans; in writing this review I realize that I actually queued with pilgrims visiting her...

The St Clement´s Monastery Church, finished in 2002, is dedicated to Saints Clement and Pantelejmon. Close to the new church are the ruins of the monastery school that Clement built on the ruins of the early 5th-century basilica at Plaosnik. He even had built his own tomb into the church, in which he was buried in 916. Almost 150 graves found at...

Heading south from the fortress, towards the lake, you will come to an excavation area. This is where the church of Sv. Pantelejmon once stood. It was built in a trefoil form, probably during the 5th century, on top of an earlier building. Mosaics have been preserved in the central part and in the baptistery. They are now sheltered by a roo

Small rowboats ply the springs behind Ostrovo Restaurant near Sveti Naum. Along the way you can watch the water change colors from bright blue to vivid green to almost reddish-brown, depending on the minerals you are sailing over. At the end of the springs there is a secluded church, built on a holy site where two springs intersect and create a...

This stately building on top of the hill can be seen from many places in Ohrid. It is located to the right of Tsar Samoil's fortress and next to the church of Sveti Bogorodica Perivleptos. In the past we were told that it had some kind of administrative function. When we visited in 2012 after a renovation, it was written above the entrance that...
