The Monastery of St Petka is from the 16th century. It does not have a monastery function anymore, but was renovated to accommodate visitors. Unfortunately, we were told it was full when we wanted to book it, although it seemed deserted when we got there to visit the church. It must be a wonderful and peaceful experience though to stay here.more
The caretaker of the churches St Nikola and St Atanas in Nakolec told us that there was an imprint of the foot of King Marko just before the border with Greece.Indeed, just between the barrier and the police station, there is a small monument and a stone with a foot-like imprint. I believe the police station is also called Markova Noga.It seems...more
The Church of St Nikola used to be just at the shore of Lake Prespa, but is more inland nowadays due to the declining shoreline of the lake.An inscription mentions the year 1921.We were told by the caretaker of the church (who we found in a shop in Nakolec, you might be able to key in this shop, see my Nakolec page) that there used to be an older...more
According to the locals, Slivnica has the nicest beach on the southern shore of Lake Prepa.Indeed, a long sandy and quiet beach with shallow shoreline was waiting for us!The water is not as clear as the water of Lake Ohrid, but this of course does not mean it is not clean! There are more water plants though, and the bottom is more muddy than the...more

Go down to the riverside and walking to the right you will find some towers for birdwatching. If you walk about 500m to the left, you will find a stage to go into the water. The Church of St George is close to the village Kurbinovo.
The modest, single naved building was built in 1191. Many of the frescoes are rather well conserved. One of the frescoes even is depicted on the banknote of 50 Denar!
Before you go to the church, you should get the key at one of the houses on the left of the road. This house has a sign with a key in red paint on its gate, see the pictures.
Just continue the same road until you reach the church.
To see pictures of the inside of the church, follow the link below to my Kurbinovo Travelogue.
